I know that you [Toady One] plan on nerfing the ranged attacks further, and not knowing their current lethality I will therefore only say this much:

Aside from the difficulty in learning how to hit with certain weapons, it really is all about speed.  You simply can't use a bow (or crossbow) at anything like the speed even an dabbling wrestler could throw decent punches.

I realise that this is something you can't address at the moment, I merely point this out so that you don't make them significantly less lethal than they are in the long-term, whatever short-term solution you come up with.

Slight correction, you can shoot a bow incredibly quickly. I've seen practiced archers fire off a dozen arrows in less then a minute, and hit the target every time. Crossbows, however, are rather slow since you have to crank them between each shot.

Given the dwarves engineering prowess, I wouldn't be surprised if they developed a way to auto-crank it.

I know the gnomes are suppoused to be the mechanical geniuses, but can anybody give me any examples of this besides WoW?

In DF, gnomes are just small humanoids which prefer to steal your booze stockpile and are on the level of other animal-men.

DF isn't the only game where crossbows work like that. The first Dungeon Siege had Siege Crossbows that fired faster than bows. The more advanced the weapon, the faster it fired.

I think he meant relative to how fast you can throw attacks.

So what he meant is anyone no matter how unskilled can throw more punches in a minute then a Bowman (which seems to be somewhat true, but people don't generally attack constantly in a fight... then again neither do archers)

There's this story / ASCII art reward in which gnomes are makers of intricate toys.

Gnomes may be one of those "Minor races" that Toady isn't going to add as a civilisation or potential civilisation for a while.

The recent updates has me wondering if we'll see realistic "damage type" VS armour type anytime.

You know, chain being superb against slashing but less so at stopping thrusts, while plate is great against said thrusts, too, so you'll prolly want war hammers or poleaxes or other anti-armour weapons. Maybe even padding under plate for protection against concussion.

I recall hearing something about something a little like that being in already, but could never find anything to substantiate it.

Indeed: My father used to be able to do things like that back in the days before his heart attack. The big thing is that, while he could crank off sniper-style shots with a bow at an ungodly rate, he could only do so for a rather short period of time. Afterward, he would be useless to the world.

Good for the opening minute of, lets say, an ambush or with horse archers that can pull away from a battlefield and rest up while another wing of archers comes in as replacements, but less useful for ground archers in a large scale battle.

The good thing about crossbows is that they require damn near no training to use relative to a longbow. Give one to a peasant along with one day of training and they will be a serviceable archer. Then you just zerg rush the enemy with your conscripts and be done with it.

Indeed, but its all relative.  As I've done both sparring and shooting (neither with any great skill, but dozens of hours of each) I feel confident to say that someone at a basic level of skill isn't going to get off more than 10-12 hastily shot arrows a minute, while I could could certainly land more than that number of telling blows with any one-handed weapon, with ample time for defence and manoeuvre.

In my opinion, I'd have rate of fire improve from a basic level far more for archery than crossbows - likewise crossbows are significantly easier to aim and consistent in operation, so accuracy is likely to improve faster with a crossbow than a bow.

There is quite a bit argument over how good mesh-type armours (like maille/chain whatever you wish to call it) are against puncture-type impacts, due to the flex allowing them to more efficiently disperse the force without deformation of the armour's surface; meaning they are more likely to cause serious bruising and breaks than actually pierce the metal armour.

Blunt trauma however, can be much more easily transferred through the mesh as there is nothing to cushion the impact and the surface tension isn't high enough to spread the impact as efficiently as something like a plate.

In anycase, Toady One's latest comments indicate that he's looking into varying the effects.  We will have to see what solution he comes up with - given how much the studies and reports vary in their results I don't envy him the task.

I made this sweet (defrag style) DF progress bar based off of an idea somebody here had thought of.

It's currently at the top of my blog, because I'm not sure how to do images in posts.
The link is in my sig if you want to see.
It took a lot of time to draw it pixel by pixel.

Yeah.  I'd update mine for this thread myself, but time + the hackish way I threw it together are prohibitive for me.

Glad I inspired something.  I must keep this in mind for any public project I work on; people like progress bars.

I'm glad you approve.

This exact thing has been talked about before.  It's a distant goal, but yes, eventually.
