Toady, I'm sure that, in the case of an emergency, marking Scamps for slaughter and extracting stomach acids. Then, there is the simple process of distilling, and hey presto! Drinking water.

Who would have thought that kittens could be a viable water source.

Imagine a combination of power goals 44 and 45: The ruler convenes a council of the nobles to appoint you the high priest of the nearby towns. Instead of waiting for them to finish their drinking session, you walk in and crush a goblet while berating their disgusting behaviour and general incompetence.

You're going to need a Fremen Death Still for that. :)

Slaughtering scamps would be an unholy act.  It will result in either

A) Being struck by lightning while underground
or
B) Scamps turning on you and eating your delicious flesh.

Are there plans to change booze production to need a water source?

Yeah, I don't remember if this is up on dev or just something that has come up before.  It's kind of in the same category of making pets eat again.  It needs some peripheral work to make it feasible.  In this case, I'm just a little worried most about having more ways to get water, especially on maps where there would be some reasonable ways to get water that you can't exploit (ice/rain/etc.), and booze is currently your only anti-thirst measure, as wrong as that is.  Ideally, yeah, you'd want them to use some water.

Thanks. I actually had an idea about that. Shouldnt dwarves be able to use barrels to stockpile water? I think that would be a nice trade-off to need water for most booze but also be able to stockpile it using rainwater/meltwater in extreme climates. It'd be realistic if desert fortesses are unlivable without oasis' or rainwater or aquifers.

Perhaps water could come by traders as well, so you could live in a desert fortress as long as you keep buying water.

Water from plants is a good idea, but you can't really get enough moisture out of wheat (or most other plants) to make actual liquid booze with it.

Obviously this could work with some high-moisture fruit, but that's basically it. You're not going to squeeze a lot of water out of potatoes, wheat, vines, or a lot of the other things you'd be brewing. And even in the cases where you can, water might wind up getting used anyway.

the only water weights i found put wheat at around 95%, with many references that most plants are around 90% (same with mushrooms).

Also, i feel your pain about these past few days. I also live in the PNW and having no air conditioning is a bitch when you are not used to hot weather.

Fair enough, but consider how dense water is compared to the rest of the wheat.

You'd have to figure how much wheat you have to harvest in order to produce a given quantity of booze, find out the water content of that booze, and then see if that quantity of wheat would provide that quantity of water. I'm not convinced that it would, since you probably don't need a hell of a lot of wheat to brew a barrel of beer, which is at least about 90% water itself.

Seattle bad but Tokyo even worse

Rainforest worst of all

No humidity effects yet in dwarf fortress right?
Accelerated food rot from humidity would make for more fun

Dune is destined to be a part of this thread, it seems.

Oh yea, are we going to be able to make soldiers carry booze instead of water in this release and what about giving the injured booze instead of water?
I think I heard about the second bit somewhere.

Soldiers carrying booze is under Squads in the List, so yes to that.  Req573 is "Boozing the wounded," so it's coming sometime, but it doesn't seem to be on the List.
