This was calculated on the basis of being one third of 20 miles, or the distance it was understood a man with a laden mule could walk in one day."

20 miles is about right for a day's walk down a reasonable dirt road.

On the subject of town distance. It's important to remember that people return home. Sure a human can travel upwards of 40 kilometers (~25 miles) in a day, but they have to spend around 8 hours doing it, but that doesn't leave time to get things done and then get back home again. 11 kilometers (about 7 miles) would only take a couple hours, leaving you with time to shop or sell goods and still have plenty of time to get home again. Most traveling isn't long distance travel, it's out and back, which halves the maximum distance you can travel.

Actually travel to market during those time periods was usually a major overnight affair. It would usually only happen once or twice a year for most peasants and they'd head to market with a mule or three and all their goods, set up a small stall, stay for a day or two until they'd sold and bought all they wanted, then pack up and head home again.

In looking at this imagehttp://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/imgs/large_island.png further, and i haven't had a chance to check if anyone else is asked this.

The large crater like regions in the main mountain range, are they large extinct volcano calderas? Or am i just going insane and reading too much into the image.

also thank you toady for all your hard work on this masterpiece

No, they're actually areas where the land slopes off into plains.

Volcanoes are features that fit into a single embark tile.

yeah but i was talking about massive volcano calderas, where a good portion mountain range has been torn apart. because a couple of them look like they bulge in the center (shown by the rivers and lakes inside the "caldera" running along the edge and not the center). The two bottom most are the best examples

^^ that sort of thing

AFAIK, a caldera is going to be located in a single embark tile.

Hey I know Toady is very into doing this project by himself, but is he that way about sound & music, because it could save him a bunch of time and effort if he let someone else do that for him.

Chiptunes would likely grow aggravating after a while. I prefer Toady's soothing acoustic melodies. To each his own, of course.

I still think that the whole fortress should be flooded with magma the moment you try dividing by zero.
This could be a handy way of teaching preschool children mathematics.

This may be blasphemy, but IIRC, Runescape has damn-near perfect music for the type of graphics that they employ (that is to say, bad graphics)

Something like that would be pretty cool for DF, at least as a peripheral program

Or perhaps as a periphedral piece of hardware that you can buy separately and can play any music you like.

We can dream.

Ohay, it's page 990! 991! So close.

Anyway, I much prefer the in game music to anything else. To be perfectly honest, I have never found a piece of music more fitting for dwarf fortress than the dwarf fortress music =3 I'd love to hear more in the same theme, if Toady had extra time to code/record some seasonal music.

I don't need music fitting the game.
I listen to my 1.6k+ techno songs while playing or I just watch movies.

I wonder who will be page 1000????
