The bear thought it was a human general.

And really, who's going to argue with a war polar bear?

"Um...sir, you're not really in charge here..."

Our bears and other war creatures don't have any armor yet.

Oh, okay. Would have been cool if they did though :) It'll be for some future release.

got appropriate wilderness creatures to enter the map from liquid/air edges properly
Does this mean that megabeasts with aquatic biomes will be able to travel across their biomes and attack forts?

So, would April be sad?  Yeah!  Is it also possible, even if I don't get really sick again?  Yeah!  It would still be sad though.

That makes me a sad panda :(

stopped metal crafters from turning the coal they brought into "large coal gems"

The real bug is that they should be called "Diamonds", not large coal gems.

Also, just joining in the whole 'WAR POLAR BEARS YES." bandwagon.

Actually, there are coal gems. "Jet" is a form of lignite, or at least quite similar, and is definitely a form of coal.

Of course, diamonds aren't actually coal, but you knew that already.

You mine the gem type with miners. The crafters just apply cuts to the raw gems to make whatever size gems, not extract them from blocks or use alchemy to transmute them.

Might be a decent use for the alchemy shop though.

At some point during the saga of Syrupleaf (a modded DF LetsPlay on SomethingAwful), somebody suggested starting a polar bear cavalry. It looks like the Humans have beaten them to it.

Ah, yeah, Toady talked a lot about this stuff (leaders of smaller entities, how/why groups split off from each other, difficulties of tracking large numbers of people)

I am well aware of what Toady has said (and if not that quote is way too large to read). Hense why I am asking the question because he didn't touch upon it except to say he wouldn't be running decision processes for every individual because there are too many.

Why does that guy have the torso of Warwick Davis attached to the legs of LeBron James?  Are only extremely disproportionate individuals capable of riding bears?  Does that mean Toady will need to include -Very Long Large Rope Reed Trousers- and *Short Large Rope Reed Tunics* for his bear-mounted warriors?

I trimmed those quotes down as much as I could so that they'd only contain the parts relevant to your questions (plus necessary context).  "Will groups of people be used for the unimportant?" is a yes/no question, and the answer (as you can see from those quotes) is yes, definitely, although those groups (entities) will also include (and usually be led by) more important people.  For your other question, "How are people put into groups," the quotes I posted give many answers to that question:
- religions
- guilds
- personality facets
- material preferences
- species (in multiracial situations)

If you aren't satisfied with these answers (seriously, read the quotes, I'm just giving a summary), then you might want to refine your questions, because I'm answering them pretty directly.

Also, on a vaguely related note, can you use the USE_MATERIAL_TEMPLATE token in a material template?  e.g. could I define a SHINYMETAL_TEMPLATE that copies most of its values directly from METAL_TEMPLATE?

Nope, you can't nest templates yet, although Toady's conscious that it'd be useful.

Are you sure about this one?  Toady said that creature templates couldn't be nested, but the way he phrased it didn't seem make a statement one way or another on material templates.  My understanding is that creature templates are problematic because of all the jumping around they do, but material templates are pretty straightforward: just read the list and overwrite the tags.
