Different hunting game?
« on: January 21, 2009, 12:10:17 am »

I've been intriged with hunting games for a while now, but disapointed at everthing i find, all hunting games i see are sports simulators were you hunt for trophies and the like.

I'm looking for a hunting games in which you hunt to survive. Sneaking around in woods, deserts, mountains, etc. Getting ready to take a shot, or to run like hell if you miss.

Yes, i'm aware of the stranded 2 thread right below, but i was searching for something more refined, more polished, not only graphics wise but with depth aswell.

The first one to say Oblivion will meet a tentacle demon the next time they go to the bathroom  ;D

Maybe Noctis? Not really sure, since when I played, it was the aliens doing the hunting, and they hunted ME. Back then, I wasn't used to playing games that actually posed a challenge, so I died several times before giving up. Been meaning to try it again actually.

Morrowind! ;D
I didn't say Oblivion.

Well, it's not first-person and the graphics aren't super great, but you could try Unreal World. It's not completely free, though.

People hunt you in noctis? I thought all you could do was explore.

I find it disturbing that there's no comercial game with realistic hunting/survival  :(

might not be what you thought you were looking for but it is what you describe above.

Good Hunting.

Then again, I consider Infinity to be overly ambitious, something that might easily spell it's downfall.

The Robinson's Requiem collection is all I can think of. I was thinking of buying it myself-- I guess you have to survive on a very wild alien world. There's supposed to be a ton of diseases and effects-- the "Violent Trauma(tism?)" screen seems to suggest that.

That's all I can really think of off hand. Unreal World would be survival, but is a turn-based Roguelike...

Well there's hunting and hiding and trapping in the UnrealWorld. It's somewhat fun.

You set up camp somewhere and make a shelter with branches and stuff.

You can engage hand to hand, throw javelins or spears, make and shoot your own arrows, dig up pits and set them with wooden stakes, and camouflage it with leaves and stuff. You climb to trees to get a good look at the area, and you sneak. Afterwards you can skin and tan the hide of prey, make fur or leather goods with it, also cut it into little pieces of meat and cook them. And then you can trade any of that stuff with other people in nearby villages.

The game isn't free but it's got like 30 (game time) days of free play for each new character.

I wouldn't call it an excellent game but it's fun for a while. Oh and it's 2D with crappy graphics and photographic avatars wearing beards made from cottonballs, so maybe it's not what you're looking for.

Metal Gear Solid 3 have you living off the land. Of course, in addition to hunting animals for food, you're also tasked with trying to accomplish covert missions. So, it may not be what you desire.

You must be thinking of something else. Maybe Notrium?

http://www.monkkonen.net/notrium.php

It's a top-down, fight-for-survival type game set on an alien planet with multiple playable races, each with their own challenges. See if that slakes your thirst, Dakk.

Notrium lasted all of five minutes for me. That five minutes consided of running around in circles getting beaten by aliens trying to find the one part that I need to build... I forget what. I didn't know what the hell I was supposed to do or where I was supposed to go.

They should make a hunting style game where you hunt the most dangerous game.

Also, dinosaurs with chainsaws and rocket launchers.

http://www.thehunter.com/ Coming soon, though it won't have crafting and the like from launch, they plan to allow you to use the animals you kill.

And it looks damn gorgeous.

OP: Very good question.

I've been interested in finding a good hunting game for a long time.  I'm a hunter in real life (deer), and love the sport.  I'd really like to see a good simulator game, but everything I've seen out there looks too much like a souped up "Duck Hunt".

One where the world is massive and immersive like Oblivion/Morrowind, but all of the focus is on hunting, camping and just general survival.  That would be great.

Edit The Hunter looks pretty good by the way, thanks for the link

Edit 2:  Holy crap, those graphics in the trailer put Oblivion to shame.

This brings up another interesting community project.

An Oblivion (alternately, Morrowind or Fallout 3) mod!
