Inspiration for Dwarven Cheese?
« on: January 19, 2009, 04:31:21 pm »

Poking around, looking for something unique, I came across this...

Casu marzu. (Wikipedia link)

Inspiration for dwarven cheese?  Not quite the same, but I think they're in the same ballpark.

I find the term 'rotting cheese' redundant.

Also, a food with something inside that can launch 15 cm? Holy hell...

I should have stopped reading that after the first sentence. I also should not have clicked on the enteric myaisis link.

Now where the hell is that bleach?

I apologize.  I should have mentioned that it's a vile concoction that could only have been discovered by a desperately starving Sardinian whose only other option was to eat dirt.

Africans have created food made of part dirt. That would be far better.

First part that got my mind stopping: Decomposing cheese with live maggots inside. Alright, I... I suppose it can happen...
Second was being sold on the black market. Well, the black market is rather shady...
Third was it being desired for high prices on the black market.

 ...

I... I think this finally did it. The internet has never done that to be before, not even the bad fanfiction.

What really got me was the bit about consumption and the paper bag... and the 'pitter pat.'  I nearly lost my lunch.

That's when I thought of the dwarves and their cheese.

Weak stomach, anyone?

After a few seasons of watching Bizarre Foods, nothing really bothers me anymore. The show even featured this at one time, if I recall correctly.

Oh, I've tried some nastiness, even termites (which are damn tasty!).  Something about this kind of got me, though.  To be honest, I really didn't almost lose my lunch, but the pitter patting did make me kind of grimace when I read it.

I find the term 'rotting cheese' an oxymoron.

You keep using that word... I do not think it means what you think it means...

I am so very, very glad that I didn't go that far. The summary was bad enough, but the section on fermentation made me stop.

It probably doesn't help that I'm eating a cheese-covered pizza right now...

I once saw a TV show about this stuff. The wrinkled old Sardinian farmer swore that the maggot cheese tasted so good. I worry about those people.

I should have stopped reading that after the first sentence. I also should not have clicked on the enteric myaisis link.

You didn't go far enough, obviously. You didn't get to the article about Maggot Debridement Therapy, which is dang cool. Getting fly larva to eat your dead flesh so your limb doesn't drop off? Awesome!

...now that I think about it, I want this to be one of the things that dwarven healers can do. Finally, a reason for insect vermin!

Quite true, must have been a slip of the mind.

By referencing it to something, shouldn't it be the Cliffs of :D ?*
Also where the hell are the purring maggots, I'm tired of eating Golgatian Hemo Cacti feces!

Besides, isn't Blue Cheese, rotten cheese? Last time I've seen it, it's barely blueish-pale white, not blue.

*- Also it kept saying mountains were bad, even though he explicitly said valleys are bad and we should climb into the Happy mountain to board the Chocolate Train, no reference to anything historical.

And also, you shouldn't be afraid of Carp, Snakeheads are worse, they can walk on land for a long time, and they bite harder, didn't know there were specifics to the sport of Fish Wrestling ( Real sport, bring friends, so you don't drown, the fish get heavy. ) , I spent many nights bleeding, when I was supposed to fight Catfish.
