Gremlin Civ?
« on: January 19, 2009, 04:33:07 am »

So, I'm playing  DF. Lalalalalalala. I had assembled a new copy to cut back on my mod usage to the essential mods. No civ mods installed, and I was careful to make sure my other mods had their /own/ raws, rather then editing current ones in by hand. I'm like 12 hours in, when I glance at the civ screen and notice....my enemy is a gremlin civ. And then when I look at the legends.... there are merpeople mentioned in it. But neither are in my entity_default, and they both have the /standard/ entries for their kind. And no, I have no merpeople or gremlins as added entities. Because I wouldn't believe me either, the following spoiler has my entity_default raw.

And because I STILL don't believe it:

....and apparently my /dwarves are human/

What. The. Hell?

Now this is interesting! Let's see... The only really good reason for those is that you have accidentaly installed some mods that DO overwrite raws... Do you have brothers or sisters? :D

Another, but kinda odd theory would be that your dwarven civ have conquered a human civ. Then all the dwarves die and only human stay alive and this makes the game go choo-choo. But this is just something I have no idea is it even possible, I just wrote this to keep my fingers warm you know.

Gremlings, uhh... They just ... Bananaphone.

World History Export:

Note: I do have the 'purge historical figures' thing on. Still, there seems to be less then 800 dwarves in the world. And dwarves don't show up on the 'play now' adventure screen.

Well, it did sound a bit like one of those indexing fails. And looks rather like one due to the humans being in mountain forts, the elves being in towns, the goblins in forest retreats, and the kobolds in dark forts (and not being [UTTERANCES] named), and gremlins in caves.

Especially when, in creature_standard, normally it's dwarf, human, elf, goblin, gremlin, (and then others that aren't pertinent)...

Dunno really, then.

I just tried regenning  it. Exact same world. Same installation.

HOWEVER - when I try it on a vanilla installation....I get a normal world. So it seems like it has to be a mod, except I have no relevant mods.

Based on a an identical thing happening to me.

If you have played around with standard creature files, for example moving cave spiders and GCS to a creature_spiders file, you end up with cave crocodile and gremlin civilizations, for some reason.

So check your creature files are all sorted out and your errorlog.

Removing a mod, i.e. removing creatures, or even moving entries around within the raw files without adding or removing anything, will produce these kinds of errors.  As CobaltKobold said, it's an indexing problem.

From the sound of it, I'd say he forgot to delete the translation of the raw files in the data/objects folder.

I believe i heard this called the "Wizard Civ" mod... being a famous example, i guess, where having a duplicate entery anywhere in your raws makes this happen... last example I heard was of sea serpents.
