In response to the misunderstanding by the military and the metalworker's guild, the woodcutter's guild does not imply that the military cannot afford better protection than the woodcutters. We only state that the woodcutters can take care of themselves, whereas the masons are not as tested by numerous scouting expeditions. Therefore, the military would have to babysit them, as it were. Do you really want to call up all of your men and send them into the wilds for several seasons on long patrols? Your men may become unhappy with that situation.
In the words of a famous dwarven general, "He who protects everywhere, protects nowhere." ((Real quote from Sun Tzu's The Art of War)) If the military must stretch itself so thin in order to protect the masons, then it is possible that a goblin ambush could slip through undetected. We do not wish to insult the military, nor feel that they are inadequate in protecting our great fortress as it currently stands. We only wish to express concern for our mason brothers' safety.
We would also like to thank the mason guild for their clarification of the project, and ask them this additional question: is the expansion intended to surround the whole fortress? If so, our objections stand, and we regretfully oppose your proposition (though your courtesy is much appreciated).
As for the near-insulting remarks about undwarvenly we woodcutters are, we would come back with the remark that we are Dwarves! We build fortresses in the mountainside, not sprawling towns like the humans. We woodcutters take to the surface to procure what is needed for our great fortress, and then return home to hearth and stone, happy that we have a military to keep us safe, and masons who keep stout roofs over our heads. We do have the best interests of the fortress in mind. How would a wall increase our wealth? It would increase safety for the future, but at the cost of safety now.
And to the thinly veiled threats given by the metalworker's guild, we would like to respond that our population growth has stagnated since the royalty arrived. Odds are there will be few migrants arriving in the near future. The metalworker's guild has not seen much use lately either. Perhaps they would be better serving the fortress elsewhere...
If such an expansion is mandated by the council, then the woodcutter's guild will send out scouting expeditions to keep our military well-informed of incoming attacks, thereby allowing them to allocate resources as necessary.
Turning now from the matters of surface expansion to the other business that has been proposed, the woodcutter's guild offers it's support to the Crafter's Guild's wise decision that clear glass be used in the monument's construction. We also offer our support in the Metalworker's Guild's proposal on new exploratory mining shafts, despite their apparent dislike of the woodcutter's guild. We would also suggest to them that the stocks of Iron we currently have be used to make steel armor for our great military.
Finally, the woodcutter's guild would like to call to vote the issue of the additional council seat for the new Farmer's Alliance. Opinions have been expressed, and it appears that thus far, we are all in agreement. The woodcutters guild votes Yea!
