im really quite addicted to this, but does take some time.

does anyone know of another games like this? i really like the way you control a house and then try to bring them to power, so was wondering if there were any other games of this sort?

Crusader Kings maybe?

Europa Universalis Rome Vae Victis is kind of like that, Scriptwolf. You have various noble houses within a country and they'll try to assassinate each other etc whilst you're just trying to push the country along.

EU rome would have been so awesome if it let you play as a noble family instead of a country.  All of those republican mechanics would actually be worth something if winning an election made you run the country while losing made you run a measly governorship.  And it would be awesome raising your private armies and going conquering Julius Ceasar style.

But anywho...
Imagine you're a feudal lord. You have a "home city". You only have jurisdiction in that home city. You can build whatever the hell you like in that home city. If you go to another city, then you cannot build there because you do not have the legal right to (maybe players could do it all below board? As a subversive tactic, maybe?). You can also boss around your subordinates in other cities and tell them what to build.

Now you're a company. You have a home city. You can build in that city and ANY OTHER CITY YOU LIKE. You are not restricted by your legal right to a piece of land.

I don't think nailing a character down to a single location is a very good thing.  It wasn't uncommunicative for a powerful vassal to have multiple powerbases.  But what it should be is significant.  If you have holdings on 6 different planets, you are important.  Those holdings are worth a lot and if you were desperate enough for cash to sell one, they would bring a kings ransom.

It would've been nice if they'd've fixed the game mechanics etc before leaving the game to die, too. :p

Oh, I'm not saying that. I just think it's important that most of the player's strength is in their vassals. Otherwise you do end up with situations where a single House can field more armies than the rest of the noble Houses combined. Which is something I don't really like seeing. I was thinking maybe a House could have a certain number of planets based off what it's titles are. So, a Duke could have three and have loads of vassals, a Count could have two and quite a few vassals, a lord has one and not many vassals and a measly ser has one planet and no vassals.

I'd like to be able to see that Ser still be capable of influencing the game. Whether by excessive specialisation (leading to bonuses around that speciality etc), by manipulation or by political oomph, I just don't want that Ser to think "I can't do anything because House Dickhead with 30 planets will crush me within moments". That's just annoying.

What I would like is an Imperial stockmarket based on the Imperial homeworlds where all (legal) deals must be made. Planets outside Imperial jurisdiction that allow the House to have business ventures that aren't really legal and everyone can get involved in (at least until the Empire comes around and clears the planets out) etc etc.

Type    Accrued    Projected
Total Income :    87694.56    263984.56
Total Costs :    66033.24    198999.49

Stupid military, covert ops, retainers, internal security, technology research, education, infrastructure, and above all else, facility maintenance sucking up all my income.

And then all then all the other houses are attempting to push me out of the tech markets and the trans markets! Pah! They will pay for their insolence!

In other news, I have started gambling heavily in in order to boost my profits. So far I've had a remarkable success rate, consistently more money than I lose. The fact that this money comes from the pocket of one of my economical rivals in other markets doesn't hurt either.

Wiz has created a mod called "Reign of the Ancients" that I think could serve as an adequate fix for the problems in Rome: EU. He's also planning on releasing a sequel, RoA 2.0.

Have your characters visit the gaming house leisure facilities. They can play roulette there.

Don't have the money currently, sorry. I may be interested in them later for a possible takedown of Cirith though. ^.^

Sweet armok the madness of my reckless spending.

the day you defeat Cirith, you could possibly declare independence from the empire...and honestly i would be honoured to join you in such a venture XD

You can do that anyway. Cirith has no military power.
