So i got sieged by goblins.
« on: January 18, 2009, 02:10:34 pm »

So i had my first ever Siege today, but it only consisted of about 12 goblins, seems kinda small group for a siege. And the Ambush the goblins do are usually about 8 for me. anyone care too shed some light on sieges? the group also had no leader of any type, my marksdwarves had kill all but one goblin before they even got to the gate.

They get bigger, but it's mostly the same as the first one. They still stupidly and aggressively charge your gate. The only sieges you need to worry about are with squads of bowgoblins of crossbowgoblins. Watch out for those elite crossbowgoblins!

What's more fun is the random Kobold ambushes in the first autumn!

That would only happen if kobolds manage to steal a large value of items.

The sieges can double/triple in size as you go on. They will advance toward the entrance of your fortress, unless the only entrance is a risen bridge. Then they just sorta stand there until they go away.

I have only been seigd myself a few times, never by more than 12 or so gobs at once.  Oddly though, I routinely get hit my multiple ambushes within seconds of up tp 8 gobs, once I had "Ambush.  Curse them.  x5" on my screen and that got a little hairy as they all appeared in the same area right at my gate, but my best so far is 9 ambushes either on top of the other ambushers or before the other ambushes have been wiped out completely.  Makes life interesting.

Side note, all my trade liaisons are dead.  On my "c" civ screen, my own home civ no longer has any rulers of note, and neither does the gobbo.  I think the gobbo was leaders all died at my hands in ambushes.  I did get a "<<*"Goblin Crown"*>>" or something like that from one of them.  Maybe he was their king?

just for grins,  Dwarves 217 vs Gobbo's 31.......I think we are winning.
oh, and just now, Dwarves 1 vs. Titan 1, not a bad ratio considering how bad ass a Titan is.  Oh, and one dwarf baby and 2 war dogs, but they dont count.  Mama Axedwarf isnt even upset about basing her babies skull to splinters across the shins of the Titan either.  I guess its just, you know, collatoral damage!  :P

I haven't been sieged yet, only 2 thieves, a kobold killed by a ambusher and a goblin who ran into a stone fall trap. I had an ambush of a few hammergobbos and wrestlers, the hammergobbos took out three recruits though. =(

sadly sieges and ambushes are often led by elite/legendary goblin civ leaders, and they run out pretty fast. my current fort has only 4 legendary axedwarves in leather/chain/iron plate, and they kill everything easily, only i keep them inside around a corner for the squads of goblins with bows and crossbows. those guys can be stupidly powerful.

sieges do get really really big though. ive recently given up unforbidding all the goblin crap lying around outside my fort, its so unbeleivably time consuming, and it ties up every single spare dwarf stockpiling it all quite literally until the next siege arrives. im considering turning off sieges for the first time ever just so i can get some work done, i hate the idea of those kobolts stealing off me, even if it is just random goblin clothing ive left lying in the middle of the sandy wastes.

and if you want to do things the challenging way you wont use a massive corridoor full of traps like many do. i feel that just makes things boring. plus finding and unforbidding all the bits of goblin afterwards to avoid miasma in your entrance is annoying.

Hopefully, the new release will nerf legendaries a bit

MyLittlePonyBuiltMyHotRod, this is your first warning. I would like to direct you to read our forum's FAQ and posting guidelines before posting again. Specifically we don't use swear words here, and your picture of Stalin riding a Year3 Limited Edition Starflower inside a German concentration camp was both upsetting and historically inaccurate.

Well yeah, marksdwarves will destroy everything easily in the vanilla game. [Champions are also insanely powerful..] If you don't want to loose a single a dwarf in the sieges, just make a moat and/or construct lot of traps.  :)

Goblins are the most reliable supply of iron.
And, honestly, they are stupid as hell. The siege don't get much worse when they bring along trolls (trolls can destroy buildings and are somewhat stronger).

If you want more challenge, piss off the humans. They stomp into traps once, then everyone else avoid these traps. They lay siege with a real camp outside, attacking lonely dwarf units, riding horses, attacking with bows and then retreating. Pretty annoying.

Or the kobolds. Once they manage to steal some real worth, you will get ambushes of up to 20 kobold archers.

Human sieges don't seem to rush my entrance. They tend to stay at least 100 tiles from my entrances and draw me out. Usually closer to 25 per squad if memory serves (and up to 3 squads) with some on horseback. They've always been the most interesting sieges to deal with.

For cleanup after sieges, stop item production and create two stockpiles out by the battlefield - armor and finished goods. Set a bunch of dwarves to haul only items and do nothing else. They'll clean it up pretty fast. I tend to design my killing fields to have short paths from the fort, just due to cleanup.
