More Sources of Shell
« on: April 11, 2008, 11:52:00 am »

Despite an active fishing industry and frequent trade for turtle and cave lobster, I still seem to lose 50% of fey moods and posessions that require shell. I recently had a fiasco where I had to forbid all food in a fort other than turtles. The crafter needed four shells for his turtle shell cage and was just milliseconds away from going nuts.

It would be nice if shell were more common; perhaps it could be obtainable from mussels, oysters and such. Snails, crabs and perhaps even large insects might also be a good source of shell.

Yeah, or perhaps if there where plants that had shell, like a gourd.

Or maybe shells could spawn on beaches, and collecting them could be an auto-task like with cave spider webs.

Though I do like the idea of GROWING shells. Perhaps through dwarven science we can breed a new species of fungus with extremely tough caps.

I suggested upgrading bone carving in this way too.

You could have different qualities of bone, Ivory being a good example. Some specific types of fish bones could be especially good for scrimshawing and such.

I suppose it couldn't hurt to add a few shell-bearing domestic critters. I'm still waiting for coral, horn and ivory, though.

Cooked turtles don't leave bones and shells. You could try forbidding them in the cooking menu, see if that helps.

Aside from that, the only way shells disappear is if you tell your dwarves to decorate with shell, or you make a refuse pile outside and don't remove shells from it. Make sure neither of these is the case, and you probably won't have shell problems.

I'm definitely not cooking shells. I forbid cooking lobster and turtle. I also don't touch them for crafting.

Hmmm, I guess largely the problem is that when I do get them they're placed in the refuse pile and eventually disappear. I think leaving them lying around would drive me nuts though.  :)

Great idea. Agreed.

Just make an indoor refuse pile for bones and shells only.  And disallow those from the outdoor refuse pile also, of course.  They won't disappear if they're inside.

Now, if only the same were true for clothing left outside...
