Basically, from metalsmiths, masons workshops, craftsdwarf places, you should be able to spike something with metal, stone, or wood respectively.  Weapons with spikes on should get damage bonuses.  Being spiked AND crushed by a warhammer wouldn't be pleasant, for sure.

If DF gets mathematicians then I want them to produce theorems that menaces with spikes of Koch recursion.

And since this is dwarf fortress, when you tell the metalsmiths to spike items, they would choose items more or less at random, just like the decorate jobs... XD

No, you should be able to select the item.  Functional items for spiking, like weapons, should take priority too, if this isn't possible.

This is a Dwarven Rum [10].  This item menaces with spikes of poppyseed.

This is a tower cap barrel. It menaces with spikes of bronze,iron,copper,steel and adamantine.   :(

Crossbow bolts with spikes, hanging rings, and sewn images? Aerodynamic? No. Freakin' awesome? You're damn straight.

Spikes are decrotive, not functional. Thus, a damage bonus is silly. Also, with how you can stack decorations, it'd be very broken.
