Huh, you learn something new every day. Is there a rest key?

Sadly, not that I am aware of. Of all the things I wish NetHack had, that is the largest.

The guidebook says . is rest. You're right, all it does is stand in one spot.

no, the diffrence between rest and stand still is a slightly higher chance of healing a hitpoint, vs searching

I'm not sure if . in Nethack is "rest" or "stand still" in that healing sense, but just as no-one mentioned the (kinda weird) way to rest for several turns without holding any keys (thus increasing the risk for accidentally holding for too long and getting hacked to pieces), I'll do it. The command to repeat some other command for several times is n. Just press n, type the number of turns and then press the command you want to repeat. No pressing enter or anything in the middle.

For example, to rest (or stand still, whatever, it still heals you) for 150 turns just "type" in: "n150."

This, of course, stops if you see a monster or get hungry or if there's any other danger, so it's a safe way to rest for longer times. It works for search and other commands too, but resting is pretty much the only command you'll have to repeat for dozens of times. Still, if you *really* want to make sure there's no secret door next to you, you can always type "n500s". And probably die of hunger soon.

That's the kind of rest I was talking about. So, if I want do do it, I need to use a bunch of key presses? That's stupid. They should have made it shift and 5.

I never really got into NetHack.

If memory serves, the choice of classes is rather limited and silly. Tourist? Caveman? I don't remember if you can choose your race. Crawl has many more races and classes, and it has stuff which I would actually want to be. I also like Crawl's skill system: you get experience for skills by actually using them. Does NetHack handle skills like that? I forget.

I only just recently found out that you can enhance your skills but it is rather difficult. After using a weapon for sometime, you will get a 'you feel more confident with this' message, whereby you go into the enhance screen and choose it to train it.

With Nethack, you can choose your race in a very limited way. For instance, if you want to be an orc, you can't be a samurai. Since class tends to be far more important then race overall, you tend to play as humans alot, although the other races tend to be better.

Ustxu Iceraped the Frigid Crystal of Slaughter was a glacier titan. It was the only one of its kind. A gigantic feathered carp composed of crystal glass. It has five mouths full of treacherous teeth, enormous clear wings, and ferocious blue eyes. Beware its icy breath! Ustxu was associated with oceans, glaciers, boats, and murder.

Tourist is a fun class if you like to run around the first level taking pictures of things until something comes along and kills you. :)
I remember the first time I played a caveman too.  I was throwing rocks around randomly and accidentally hit my puppy.  It died. :(

I believe it's a title you get as a wizard at level 20+.

Advice to all those wishing to ascend: Get a ring of conflict, a lot of wands of digging, and a spellbook of finger of death. Helps tonnes.
