Not that hard. But it's a bit boring sometimes, and definitely has some learning curve.

I'm curious if anyone else has found (preferrably freeware) games like Noctis (you just explore randomly generated planets. A lot).

I have a game I downloaded ages ago called 'Wanderer' which is similar, to a far lesser extent, but the almighty Google can't find it anymore, so I can't check for updates. Noctis also doesn't seem to be updating anymore, so I need something to get my fix!

Back to the OP.
There's a thread on Wanderer here, in a rather obscure forum, (the most recent post is on the top of the first page, slightly confusing)
http://www.miez.nl/arena/forum/index.php?topic=66.0;prev_next=prev#new
The game still seems to be only early in development, the forum thread has all kinds of links to unconnected demos of part of the game, the actual 'game' is in the first (last?) post. Basically you type in the name of the planet you want to visit, and the game will create that world using whatever you typed as a seed.

Seems like development is very slow, possibly because there's nobody there to encourage him, it's completely impossible to find the site. Games like this need a community like DF has.

Early screens certainly look like Noctis, with much higher resolutions.  Looks very interesting, I hope it gains more traction.

Why explore in Notics? In that Space Exploration game, you had at least a reason to explore: You're getting paid. But in Notics? Look at a random deserted planet...for fun? I can look through the Mars Rover for free.

I mean, exploration may be semi-fun. But you need something...else. I loved exploring in RTSes and revealing the fog of war, but the exploration is a means to the ends (destroying the enemy).

You, sir, are awesome. I'm going to keep an eye on it. However you found it, amazing.

I can respect that, but there are honestly some people out there who love the ride more than the destination.

When I install GTA: San Andreas on my PC, the first thing I do is get the cheat that opens the whole world up at the very beginning.   I never even touch the storyline.

It's somewhat soothing to me to be able to play a game like that or like Noctis where there is no goal.  It's just about doing anything you want in a relaxing way.

...as long as it's flying around the galaxy and staring at bucketfuls of ugly.

I DON'T GET IT!

"Good graphics" is relative, and a game with only exploration is another form of game-play, like it or not.

I'm wondering why you play Dwarf Fortress, if you hate games with "bad graphics".

No, no, you see, Fenrir would love to stare at bucketfuls of ugly as long as he can kill them with other bucketfuls of ugly. You can't do that in another game, all you can do is stare at said bucketful of ugly.

You can NAME the said bucketful of ugly. You can name the bucketful of ugly it orbits around. You can find a quadruple-star system and name it something funny. You can catch little birdies. Really, if the terrain in the game wasn't split into physical sections, the game would be great even just for walking on the planet's surface and taking panoramic shots of the landscape.

Maybe he thinks Noctis is ugly and Dwarf Fortress isn't? If so, i agree with him.

DF and Noctis use completely different graphical styles, ASCII 2D versus fugly DOS 3D.

I think it's a vastly amusing thought that elephants are so afraid of heights that when Dwarves invented the Z-axis, they couldn't bear to face dwarves in combat anymore.

Dwarf Fortress doesn't have bad graphics. I could tolerate Noctis' graphics if there was something fun to do. In a game where the only thing to do is to fly around the galaxy to look at the scenery, I expect the scenery to be worth seeing and not look like pixel vomit.

Oh, come on! You play it because you can NAME stuff?

Yes, actually. Well, back when it was worth it anyways. Syncstarmap doesn't work now, or at least didn't, last I heard. I still like to fly out and explore stuff, it gives you the feel of traversing literally uncharted space, finding oddities, marking interesting planets with witty names, noting felysian worlds... yeah, there could be more stuff to do, like HUNT stuff other than the little birdies, or collect minerals with stupidly long random names... but still, what's there is fun for what it's worth.

Oh, and you'd be surprised, but the scenery does look great sometimes. Usually it's just the landscape, but sometimes forests provide a good look.

I'm also a fan of the graphics and landscapes in Noctis.  :x

It's very distinctive and you can really feel the game's author through it, because it's so unique.
