Exploration games!
« on: January 14, 2009, 03:21:32 pm »

I'm curious if anyone else has found (preferrably freeware) games like Noctis (you just explore randomly generated planets. A lot).

I have a game I downloaded ages ago called 'Wanderer' which is similar, to a far lesser extent, but the almighty Google can't find it anymore, so I can't check for updates. Noctis also doesn't seem to be updating anymore, so I need something to get my fix!

Must play more now!

Hmmm....the URL doesn't look right.  Looks like it just sends you to the page.

EDIT EDIT:   I'll just quote it.

Greetings fellow Stardrifters! I discovered this game after someone in the Dwarf Fortress (a freeware game worth checking out, although still in alpha) forums mentioned the game and gave a link leading here. Needless to say, I played the game. It's bizarre in way how fun the game is, especially considering how different it is from most games. It's not a game with set goals for sure, but it's not quite a do-whatever-you-want freeform sort of game either. Indeed, there's only one major thing that you can do, yet it feels rewarding.

I've looked long and hard for something that comes close to Noctis's awesome level freedom and exploration.  I haven't found anything nearly as good.  Here's a few games with Noctis-like elements in them:

Elite and it's sequels have pretty big universes, but it is too trade focused.

Infinity looks promising, but the planets look pretty boring, and I don't think you will be able to get out of your ship and walk around.

Star Trek Online sounds like their going to do some procedural planets.  We'll see how it turns out.

Evochron Renegades is a pretty cool game, but again, you can't get out of your ship

Parkan 2 sounds a little like Noctis, but I heard it's pretty boring

I don't know what to say about this one.  It looks really promising though!

What are you all saying? Noctis is boring. All you can do is fly around the galaxy and look at stuff -- really boring and ugly stuff. I can handle bad graphics if the gameplay is good, but there is no gameplay.

Awesome game = Fact

This is suppose to be a suggestion topic anyway, not how much you hate the games being suggested.

EDIT:  Ugh, I should of said,  "NEGATIVE ALERT!"  But it's too late now.   :-\

Seeing as how this is a forum for Dwarf Fortress, saying that DF is awesome is a given. You wouldn't be here if you absolutely detested it.

That's why I thought he was talking about Noctis.

I'm not one of those people. I really do think Noctis is boring.

It's just an engine. Perhaps you meant the game "Love"?

I never said that.

Anyway, the link should bring you to "Love" which is  a indie game that will allow you to play with others online in a constantly changing world.  Beta Testing should be soon.  Can't wait.   ;D

Dare I ask about the name? "Love" doesn't sound like my cup of tea.
