How to clear a magma vent in 30 seconds
« on: January 14, 2009, 01:33:28 pm »

I realize you are all probably going to say 'well DUH' - but I figured this out and felt very, very clever at the time, especially since it wasn't on the wiki. I was playing with a magma vent, and being annoyed at all the fire imps and the magma man. But I didn't have enough dwarves to build lots of cage traps, I didn't feel like waiting for a long 'annoy the imps into leaving me alone' system of channels, and I didn't even want to wait for some sort of water system. I wanted my magma vent /NOW/.

So, I dug up one z-level above the vent's opening, I dug out a rectangular room with one entrance. I then channeled out every border of the interior of the room except the very entrance. Which I put a statue in (on the side bordering the room, so a dwarf could dig out the last segment without being in the cave-in)...

And poof, all my fire-imps and my Magma Man were dead, fairly quickly, and with only 7 dwarfs.

And interestingly enough, Magma Mist doesn't hurt.

So, let me get this straight. You collapsed a block of floor the same size as the magma pipe, into the magma pipe? How does that work when the pipe gets narrower towards the bottom? Actually, that doesn't matter for a cave-in, does it?

And interestingly enough, Magma Mist doesn't hurt.

Of course not! It just clears the dwarven lungs of all the vomit, blood and mud that cakes everything!

I think it was a single block, causing the resulting dust to knock out the enemies and drop them into the planets core.

That or cause some injuries from dropping. Anyway, it would indeed solve a lot of problems.

Oh, I thought this meant how to drain a magma vent in 30 seconds.   :(

MUST DO THIS NOW.

Something like a fifty tile large channel that flows into a chasm on the lowest z level to add pressure, with weather, temperature and cave in's turned off to speed up FPS?

Seeing as how magma isn't pressurized, and flowing magma is slooow, fifty pumps a level above the magma flow would probably work best.

I understood nothing, contributed nothing, but still got to win, so good game everybody else.

but wouldn't they only pump out the top layer?
or is magma screwpumping different?

You can't channel out the bottom z-level to make a chasm, can you?  That would make a very weird planet too.

 Clarification:
Dig a pipe on the bottom z-level from the bottom of the pipe to the bottom of the chasm.
Set up pumps so magma going through pipe is pressurized. Pumps do this with magma.
Dig out the wall separating the magma pipe from the pipe.

 Watch magma pipe drain.

What I did specifically was I looked at about what the narrowest section of the magma pipe was, and made a square section of the cavern collapse downwards. Not that it mattered, since I calculated wrong, it was too big, but collapsed all the way down anyways, causing everything to die. So rather then spending umpteen hours waiting until I could trap the vent, or build some complex channel system, I just dropped a big rock in, basically.

Though, /draining/ a magma pipe in 30 seconds would be a bigger acheivement, I admit.

That would require an atom smasher on most of the levels.

 I support this megaproject.
