It'd be nice to be able to see the passage of time without having to pause the game so often. Thoughts?

I think that gray border needs a lot of options...  the things people want to do with it no longer fit, so players should be able to choose what and where.  Then the important bits can be moved out of the announcement area (as has been suggested) and the lesser bits can be placed under announcements.
