Photography thread
« on: January 13, 2009, 09:47:49 am »

I have no idea if there are any amateur (or professional) photographers on here, but on the other forum I post on there's a sweet thread where people post pics they've taken and shoot the shit about cameras, exposures, lighting and so on.

i'm a very amateur photographer myself, and at the present time my camera is broken. The last picture I took was in Jerusalem last spring right before I dropped it. But, I spent a couple months in the middle east before that and I have some awesome pictures.

Enjoy, and then post your own works.

That third picture there is really poignant, and the last one is one heck of an awesome landscape.  That stained glass window is also an incredible shot.  You should travel more often, and bring a spare camera next time!

I don't take many pictures, and at the moment the only photocapture device I have is my phone camera, which is naturally quite lame (and ridiculously slow).  My mom has an itchy trigger finger when it comes to cameras, but she...  Well, let's just say that we don't have the same taste.  She seems to think that the only way you can take a picture of someone is if everyone is facing the camera and smiling for the shot.  I disagree.  Strongly.

Far too many times I've seen a really nice group shot get broken up because she directs everyone's attention to the camera before snapping a photo.  There was also a time in India when I had the camera (her arms were slightly busy holding the young infant of a neighbour's daughter), and I saw a shot that would've made her look like a goddamn Madonna.  But as soon as she noticed I was pointing the camera at her, she insisted on grinning stupidly into the lens.  I never did get that shot...  Hope I remember it.

I've taken a few other photos, but since I was using my mom's camera I don't have the shots.  I'm certainly no pro, but a couple of them turned out alright.

Also, I can't believe this is the first time a thread like this has popped up.  Wonderful stuff.

Those are some awesome photos. I hope mine can compare. I'll post them later. Damn these uploads take a long time.

It's a lot easier to take awesome pictures when you're in exotic and awesome places so I'll try and find some good "everyday" ones next

I suggest you use spoiler tags.

It helps. Your images shouldn't fly up into our faces since there's so many of them. Gets kind of hard to reply when the button keeps moving.

I, too, am an amateur photographer.  A very amateur photographer, thanks to DF consuming my life (you mostly have to go outside to get good pictures, and my game has "Dwarf Fortress players can go outside" turned off).  Those pictures Jude and Yanlin posted are quite intimidating, but nobody said that I have to beat their quality to post in this topic, so I'll go ahead.  My instrument of choice is a Nikon D50.

I actually had a little "achievement unlocked" sign pop up on my field of vision when I finally captured this little guy:

No joke, I thought, "Strike the Earth!" when I saw this.

The next day, this same anhinga fought and beat a fifty-pound dog which attacked it, but I didn't have my camera on me, I was walking the dog at the time.

Dude. That last image, if it weren't for the little black square blotch on the right, would be perfect!

May I request you to post some pictures like the 2nd one in this thread if you have some? I am making a map for Warcraft3 game which is set in fallout/wasteland-styled theme so I'd like to have a nice loading screen before the game starts. I will give you credits for sure.

This one isn't perfect, but it's the best I'll be able to do today.  It's likely that tomorrow I'll have another chance to get a shot of this girl, but she's skittish and it's really hard to get within shooting distance of her nest.
