Change them back?  The sprites are 90% the same as Sphr's originals,  I just made the colours a bit more defined.  I don't really get the whole "oh noes!  it ar animez!!!" thing.  Anime style is defined by exaggeration of features.  16x16 sprites must exaggerate features in order to be recognizable and differentiable.  All 16x16 character sprites match the style of one anime or another.

Even 1 pixel eyes on a 5x5 head equates to eyes that are 1/5 the width of the head, each.  Compare that with this:

Besides, pansy bishounen anime style is befitting for elven prettyboys.

Thanks for the all the support, guys.  I really appreciate it.

To be perfectly honest, I never actually went to the trouble of removing the accented characters in my own game, because a bit of graphical weirdness in names doesn't really bother me.  For this release, I included a few different folders in the package.  This explanation will be repeated on DFFD and in a readme in the mod itself.  Each folder is just extracted on top of the root of dwarf fortress.

If this doesn't work for everyone, then I'll see about getting a pre-packaged installer.  I do all of my work on this before I leave for work, so I'd really rather not have to maintain two DFFD entries.

/mod-main/ folder contains the bulk of the mod; all the graphics and object definition files.
/mod-accent/ folder contains the language files modified to remove the accented characters
/mod-init/ folder contains my current init file

Finally tried it. Looks wonderful, except for two things.

1. The vermin remains are a bit hard to see. You might want to brighten the purple on them a bit.
2. White sand deserts (the surface) are painful on the eyes. So painful that its hard to see the (much darker by comparison) everything else.


Aside from those two points, this is a wondeful mod, and your upload made it super-easy to use.

Edit: You might also want to check and verify something. I can see finished downwards staircases, and finished upwards ones, and unfinished upwards ones (the zigzag picture) - but all I see is a black square for downwards staircases that have yet to be built.

On 1: I'll take a look at shifting that tile more towards lighter tones.  Might also be palette related.
On 2: I will admit to not having embarked on a desert once since I put t he mod together.  I'll try that a bit later and see what I can do about it.  Not sure whether a palette change or a tile change is most appropriate.

On Edit: Yes.  The original staircase I took had transparency instead of black, and now I know why.  The transparency mask is inverted for use when you designate things.  This issue may recur with another tile or two.  I'll fix the downward staircase for the next update, let me know if you spot any others.
