I was digging down looking for a bottomless pit i have somewhere on my map, but i accidently hit my demon pit in the process. The weird thing is there's no demons down there, just a bunch of tied up elves, humans, and a couple dwarves, i thought my unprepared dwarves were going to die a quick and untimely death, what gives?

The demons start hidden, and then get revealed when they attack or come across a dwarf. Have fun!

just happened lol, i'm going to die a quick and fiery death, who knew that spirits made of pure fire would be hungry, but now their just kinda hanging out at the entrance to their lair, do they just kinda hang around like that?

Can they pathfind to any dwarf? Are there constructed walls in the way (as this is the only reason I can think of why a spirit of fire wouldn't be able to reach a dwarf, short of lack of dwarf)?

If you hit the top of the HFS, I don't think that the demons will go find you... one time I found the HFS, and the chained up civs inside, but no demons came out because the entrance to the underworld was a 1x1 area, three stories deep 

...Can the stuff from the HFS fly?

Spirits of Fire can fly, as well as the big bad demon, but all the others can't.

How come there are never any goblins in the pits? Only elves, humans, and dwarves?

The goblins bring them home for scones and tea.

I think that gobbos are lesser minor demons, or something.

Not quite; I think it's that the demons don't smite the goblins in exchange for their eternal worship.

Demons follow their superiors, and I think worship their superior's superior.

Creatures who can fly will only fly somewhere if they can find a walkable path there. It's an artifact of the pathfinding code, which will hopefully be fixed at some point. So even if you have spirits of fire, they won't come out if you channel a hole in the roof.

Are you sure that's how it works?  I hit the pits a while back by hitting the lower "shaft" part.  The regular (flying) demon immediately came into the newly mined area, but all 20-something tentacle demons didn't move.  Does this have to do with how the demons are generated?

That might have been because it was right next to the channeling dwarf, and was able to get to it by virtue of wrestling
