Jailed Dwarves Stamping out License Plates
« on: January 12, 2009, 08:32:32 pm »

I am told that if you assign them a chair in their cell they will sit at it and bookkeep.
THis astounded me, but after thinking about it, I decided I wanted to do more than put my jailed citizens to work as bookkeepers. I need to know more:
Will they use a table? (must it be inside their 9-square? or can it border it, next to the chair)

Remembering to have it border their chain, what else can you get them to do?
Will they use one-sqare workshops? (querns. Mills)
How about larger ones?
WIll they farm? (if seeds and farm are all bordering their chain)  - with careful construction you could create a 7 square farm.
how about train rats? (since you don't need to go to the Kennel to do this, just have food and a rat in a trap)

I'd like to know what jailed dwarves can do also, it can be helpful to have a chained convict fill ponds for a living, and it's cheaper then creating a pump!

Or you could have them run a pump. Exercising in Prison.  Getting strong so they are noones "bitch".

I think that all workshops are 3x3, but dwarves must be on the center tile to work at the workshop, and chains can't be fixed on one of the workshop's 8 outer tiles, so there's no way to let a chained dwarf work a workshop.  Stuff like pumping iron seems possible in theory, though.  I wonder if dwarves chained in a meeting hall will still converse with other dwarves.

Dwarven rehab?

This bears investigation!

Hmm. Chain them in a legendary dining room? That might work very, very well.

I like the idea of giving them something to do, too. It ought to give them at least a small mood lift.

Under the economic pay scale, would dwarves engaged in pumping earn a small salary?

Yes, for the other dwarves entertainment as targets for the remains of their dinner...
Though considering throwing mechanisms in DF it would probably be lethal.

So many possibilities, and I don't currently have a prison system fortress set up right now to test them!

I think that all workshops are 3x3, but dwarves must be on the center tile to work at the workshop, and chains can't be fixed on one of the workshop's 8 outer tiles, so there's no way to let a chained dwarf work a workshop.

Not all workshop jobs require the workshop, I think. Gathering sand might not (just bags and sand). I'm not sure rat training does (just rat-in-a-trap and food).

Mills\Querns are only one square.

Farming might be possible (with a prison seed stockpile also within reach)

Would dwarves train in the military skills if you gave them a bed and set it to ''barracks''?

Would a dwarf use a table bordering his ''cell'' ? (ie. outside the nine-squares, but touching them) or do they have to be able to ''stand'' on a table to eat at it.

Hmm. Chain them in a legendary dining room? That might work very, very well.

People already make lavash prisons to give prisoners good thoughts, but if this would get them to socialise, what a great idea! And think of the story-benefts of having prisoners chained up along the edge of the dining hall. There is one problem, though. Some prisoners are violent, and will hurt folks that get too close. ''internal'' doors to cells within the Dining room would solve this, since you could lock them if the prisoner was too violent, or allow visitors if not.

Can jailed dorfs go up and down z levels like chained things can? That could help make a couple jobs possible...

The stairway would have to be placed so that on the upper level, it overlaps one of the passable tiles of the workshop.  It's worth a shot.

Anyone testing these? I've not got a good fortress up for getting prisoners, so I'm having a tough time of it.

I have a fortress with all the nobles bar the king at the moment. (Population 164 and rising). I could probably test this but it would require a restructuring of my prison block and it would have to wait a couple of days anyway.
