I know why Toady made nobles give unreasonable as we as impossible mandates.  He is making a parody of all the people on this forum who demand new features in the game that are very hard to borderline impossible to put in.  I am sure the people in that giant turtle thread earned a new lever in their rooms...

 Actually, not only do the people of these forums have reasonably good suggestions(Underground diversity, fixes to oversights and bugs, balancing and tweaks), but Toady himself is good at fulfilling near-impossible requests(Three dimensions).

 And specific, near-impossible things could just be added to the bloats and powergoals pages.

Not to mention fixing bugs that can only occur because of modding (boiling gold blood, for instance).

Even ignoring all else... a lot of people suggest things Toady has already said he was going to put in the game.

So the suggestions can't all be unreasonable.

Note: This isn't including "Expansion" threads which use something Toady is officially going to do... but expands it and adds ideas.

The suggestions on this forum are a lot like noble demands.  You have 2 main types of demands / suggestions.

1.  A suggestion for something that is already going in the game, or expands, or builds upon something that is already going in the game.  This is like when a noble mandates something to be build that you are already going to build.  This is a good kind of mandate and results in an automatic happy thought.

2.  When you ask for something that would require redesigning a large part of the game.  A good example of this is the giant turtle thread.  This is like when a noble mandates glass items on a sandless map.  It usually results in a new lever.

Also  there is the idea that massive numbers of nobles show up, consume massive resources, require lavish room, and demand things that are hard or even impossible to build.  Toady is making a parody of all the people that play the game and make suggestions without ever donating.  Keep in mind I am NOT talking about all the people that have donated.

Wow. And here I always thought it was in mockery of reality and all those terrible nobles in the past who lost their heads in rebellions and were secretly hated by entire countries and their populace because they were total asshats and terrible rulers by making senselessly outrageous demands of the oppressed and generally unhappy peoples they ruled. By all means, let them eat cake. *cough*

So people making outrageous demands after donating is certainly ok? So if we want to be morons, bribe Toady first? So if your noble handed out coins to workers and gave them happy thoughts, it would make it OK when he throws a tantrum and demands something you can't easily provide? Or he throws a tantrum and kills one of your workers, then pays off the others to shut them up and dispose of the body?


P.S.: I don't mean to sound like a douche today, i'm just feeling sarcastic and wanting to point out something. No offense intended to anyone.

Actually the OP has a valid point. We know that lot of suggestions won't be coded in ever. Some suggestions are absolutely nonsensical even. Still, it's no problem, if the users will keep creating these topics. The giant turtle suggestion what you've mentioned [OP], is a good example. It won't be implemented ever, I am 99.99% sure about it, but still, it was fun to read. Those unique/weird suggestions are usually quite interesting. There is only one thing what annoys me in this subforum...yeah, when X stuff has been suggested 10 times already, but someone makes yet another topic about it.

Yeah, but in the loads of junk that get sifted through, people do actually make good, sound, well-thought-out suggestions. Just... not every day. And unless Toady ever says otherwise, we have no way of truly knowing if he is mocking people, mocking former dictators, or a little of both.

Oh, and on a side note. Isn't this thread just one of those threads?
