Tesla also had a lot of completely ludicrous ideas about what exactly electricity was.  Basically, he saw electricity as waves of movement through matter in a very old fashioned ether-like way.  Since it's hard to get too far from reality and still produce results, his wacky phlogistonic view of physics had the same practical ends.

The culmination of this was Tesla's attempt to build a giant-ass electric pulser to send messages to Mars with sky shaking waves of electricity.  When people pointed out that, between his version of electricity being waves of matter, and space being a vacuum, by his own theories his pulser couldn't work, Tesla described such comments as "unhelpful".

Tesla was many cards short of a deck, and Einstein stole some early work and made up important sounding bullcrap to stay relevant afterwards.  Instead, I nominate Robert Oppenheimer.  He built the weapon that would end the world, and knew it, in a rare display of cognizance of one's own mad science.
