New Ability

I think the ability to give some creatures the ability to leap could add a ton of strategic value to the game. The ability would take 1-2 secs and then propel them a few spaces forward (over that moat you just made) or up a level onto that pretty wall.

This ability would go great with Werewolves, and mounted Goblins. Maybe as the ability is already scripted in we could give Trolls and other large creatures the ability to throw smaller ones. Like a Troll throwing a Goblin into your fort to try to find a level to pull.

First we need to figure out how set up the sizes for tiles. Right now they seems to fit seven dragons, eight hydras, and one fat lazy dwarf with ease.

Cyclopes, Titans, and Bronze Collossi I think should have the 'step over your shit' ability.

The way it would work is: if you've only got 1 z-level high walls, or 1 z-level wide channels protecting your fortress, Mr Big "steps over your shit", and you have a problem.

This would be grouped together with the 'tapdance on your dwarfs' skill, the 'hey, crossbows tickle!' ability and 'your trap just got pwned' special power.

When the Magic Thread gets here, dragons and demon lords should ofcourse get the advanced 'all your base are belong to us' spell.

Yeah that idea really is a problem.. "a few spaces forward" could mean "over a few trees" and I just don't picture a beak dog managing it.  Or z-levels, on top of a tree.. can't imagine my goblins in wuxia flicks.

Tho I'd certainly like a climb ability that would allow certain (most?) monsters to make it out of a 1 z level moat or to scale a 1 z-level wall.  Also monsters could climb each other, so a troll might stand by a 2 z level wall and goblins could climb up him and then over the wall from there.  Or something.

But yeah, the size abstractions make it difficult.

There's all sorts of abilities that Toady is holding off on, obviously.   These sorts of things will all start to show up when the skill arc happens, and then we'll all be climbing and swimming and leaping and all that good stuff.   It'll be good, I promise.

Hm... Maybe the ability to jump, as long as the square isn't occupied? Precluding jumping over walls and trees, but not over pits. Seems like a simple enough solution.

If Leaping is added I hope it doesn't become magical travel like a lot of games do it.

Leaping shouldn't traverse all its tiles in one turn.

Yeah a bit more similar to that... though that example works against what I said if you take some of the contriteness of dungeons and dragons to heart.

I mean afterall, I don't remember many beings jumping and getting to where they land instantly.

First we need to figure out how set up the sizes for tiles. Right now they seems to fit seven dragons, eight hydras, and one fat lazy extremely dead, bloated dwarf with ease.

Fixed...

Silliness on my part aside, I do like the idea of different creatures having various movement abilities, including jumping leaping.

Jumping/leaping is a great idea, and I think huge humanoids stepping over defenses *would* be a nice idea actually, also spider type creatures might just be able to climb over even vertical or ceiling surfaces, and ofcourse some creatures (giant moles, whatever) might burrow through soil/sand or even rock, or phase through solid substances (earth elemental type creatures, or incorporeal undead).

Wait, what? I thought that unlimited number of creatures can be on the same tile. Something has been changed?  ???
