People get on television all the time and say Arab when it is actually Arabian.

Well, "Arabian" would mean "on or from the Arabian peninsula" and "Arab" would mean any of the Arabized people (from Morocco to Iraq). It would be incorrect to call a Palestinian "Arabian."

People get on television all the time and say Arab when it is actually Arabian. I refuse to see why this incident is very significant, espicially since the British are called Brits, Australians Ausies and New Zealanders Kiwis.
I've never heard an Arab refer to themselves as Arabian before.  In fact, most Arabs don't live in the Arabian region, especially if you define that as the Arabian penisula.

It's true that Arab culture dominates the middle east.  The exceptions to this are Iran (mostly Persians although there is a significant Arab prescence, especially in the SW), Turkey (Turkish), Isreal (although the Palestinians are mostly Arab and outnumber the Isrealis, a few of whom are also Arab), some of the Lebanese (but most are Arab) and the Kurds (although they are sometimes considered Arab, this can be a touchy subject however).  Syria, Jordan, most of Lebanon and Iraq are all considered Arab but wouldn't usually be called "Arabian"
However, many people's of Africa consider themselves Arabs.  This isn't a technicality, Egypt alone has more population then the Arabian penisula.  The African countries on the Med are all Arab (Egypt, Libya, Algeria, Morocco) and Arab culture extends somewhat inland, for instance some of the Somalia population would consider themselves Arab.  So, you'd be better off describing it as an African culture then an Arabian one although that too would be way off base.  Geographic terms don't summerize the term succinctly at all as it's a very broad and diverse cultural movement.

So anyway, what you think is a reasonable statement about someone else's culture can in fact be completely wrong.  Saying "Arabian" would probably just confuse, not offend.  But it shows pretty clearly why it's nice to be respectful rather then assuming what a label does and doesn't mean to someone else.

I am Arabian, it is just that in Arabic, everyone who had his ancestors speaking Arabic is called "Araby", or so I got the impression. It just goes to show that these things can be under your nose for quite a while.

"I thought somebody here would realize that Paki is insulting because it does not understand why Pakistan is called Pakistan."

Can someone translate that for me? Who's "it"? Why do we need to understand why Pakistan is called Pakistan? Do we need to understand why Mongolia is called Mongolia? And why is an abbreviation insulting because it doesn't "understand" the full word? Is "states" an insult then?
/headexplodie

Because when you say Paki, you're implying that there is an ethnic group known as "Paki" that live in Pakistan. And that's wrong. There is the Afghani ethnic group, the Kashmiri ethnic group, the Pathuns, the Sindhi, and the people of Balochistan.

Why not address them by the ethnic group? If somebody is a Pashtun in Pakistan, call him a Pashtun, not a Paki. If someone comes from the province of Sindh, call him a Sindhi. If somebody is a Kashmiri, call him a Kashmiri. Don't start lumping people together into one 'group'.

I mean, hack, you got some tribes straddling the Northwest Frontier, walking back and forth between the Afghani/Pakistani border. Not to mention the recent wave of Afghani refugees that is coming into Pakistan. I don't think an Afghani would like it if you call him a "Paki" just because he's in Pakistan currently.

(Well, it's how I'm seeing it as offensive. It's offending me right now, at the least.)

Servant: That's silly. How about Indians then? Who have tens of thousands of ethnic groups each with their own individual languages and religious beliefs. Are you then required to know all the ethnic groups, some of which the English language can't even pronounce, instead of calling them Indian?

Or me? I'm Chinese. We have hundreds of ethnic groups as well? Is it an insult to call me Chinese then instead of my specific ethnicity?

Hey! I have genetic histories in Portugal, Germany and Korea! Refer to me as a Korean/Portuguese/German American! You MUST know my genetic history/religious beliefs/culture at a first glance! If not, then yer a stupid American who isn't taught enough geography!

Edit: Oh hell, I hope this isn't considered trolling.

Wow. In the part of the US I live it's alright for even politicians to refer to people living in the middle east as many, many derogatory terms. It's also common for everyone to think that non-christians are evil. (It's understandable since 90% of the people around Huntsville are 50 years or older.)

That does seem pretty funny.  Maybe I got a misimpression though.  I've only known Arabs from Iraq and Lebannon (although she lived in Egypt for a while).  Where do you/your ancestors come from?

Although come to think of it it's not all that weird.  There's plenty of really basic stuff about their European/African/Asian ancestors that most people in the U.S. have no clue about.  You could learn the correct way to say "Eire" (the Irish name for Ireland) and I doubt one in a hundred Irish-Americans would know what you were saying, including myself until quite recently.

Well, Indians and Chinese are both alright because it mention where you come from, India/China. And Pakistani, well, you come from Pakistan, that's okay.

But there is no such ethnic group called Paki. So that's why I'm offended, because you're implying the existence of a group that doesn't actually exist.

I might have been a little confused. If you want to call someone by the name of what country they are from, then call them Pakistani. If you want to address them by their ethnic group, call them by the ethnic group. But don't make up an ethnic group known as "Paki", since there are no "Paki"s.

And if you say Paki is short for Pakistani, well, why is it that hard to say a second syallbal?

We're lazy! C'mon, we do it to the US all the time, hell we even do it for some people's names. I'm sure for those who don't know the origin of the term Pakistan (which I imagine would be a fair few), Paki is a legitimate abbreviation with no insult intended. Of course many people do use it to be offensive, but that doesn't mean everyone does. I think we're being a little bit hard on Prince Harry here guys.

90% of the posts are saying no one has the right to be offended...  A few of us are say that Harry isn't a racist or anything but should amend his language.  Have I missed the posts where people are being hard on the Prince?

I may have misquoted, correct me if I have. Also if I spelt ya name wrong.
