Stupid question about "Urist"
« on: January 11, 2009, 11:15:59 am »

New to the boards as of Dec08.  The 'Urist' thing is pretty funny, but I can't stand it anymore.  Background?  Why is it 'Urist'?  Where'd this particular dwarf name come from, and why's it the default dwarfy name used on the boards?

Just curious.

Someone a while back did a solo dwarf fort and chronicaled its development, offering a lot of character to the dwarf, who was named Urist.  After that, people started noticing that the name Urist came up a lot in their own forts... which is true, but no one would have noticed if it hadn't been for the solo fort game.  Since that name was stuck in people's heads, it was a convenient placeholder name for any generic dwarf.  Just think of it like "John Smith".

Bomrek means "Whip".

I have a bunch of words I use in addition. My favored surname is Delerkador, but I use Bomrek and Åst as well.

Its funny, I always thought that Bomrek meant spear, but that's actually Lokum.  Must have gotten them confused somehow.

What about Cog? Is he all forgotten? By the way, Urist was a woman.

I too was confused by all this Urist-talk.  Took me a while to find that story too.  Made me want to try a solo-fort.  Sorry, this may be a silly question... is there a collection of Fortress stories like Urist and Boatmurdered?

I merely assumed Urist was a highly Dwarven name of Dwarfness.

Urist though isn't all that common (I think it shows up more then most names because it is unisex... but there are others) it just is noticed most often.

So basically it isn't THAT common... it just seems that way because that is all people look out for.
