Suggestion: Aiming in Combat
« on: January 11, 2009, 10:40:49 am »

This is something I think would make DF a lot more fun, but for some reason has been left out, and I couldn't find it by searching. Aiming your strikes could add a lot to combat.

I think this could work if aiming simply added a penalty to hit, depending on the chance you would get that hit anyway. (So that you can't just lob off everyone else's heads all the time.) As long as you're not aiming for the body, it would generally be harder to hit, right? With archery, especially. Trying to hit out your enemy's eyes with your bolts sound super-awesome, but in reality it would be super-hard as well. Of course, I believe this would do well with a "aimed shot" where it takes you maybe twice the time, but you get 1.5 times the accuracy.

Unconscious or otherwise less agile enemies is where this really starts to get fun. Imagine cutting off body parts at will or lopping out eyes with a dagger. Even stabbing a spear straight through someone's head. If someone's unconscious, you should get the first move, and your attack would be way more deadly than normal. Also held enemies should have a similar weakness, allowing you to do a lot of the things in Toady's official todo list. Slitting someone's throat, for example. Striking down an enemy that kneels before you to beg for life.

For those of you who don't like the idea, and like the speed and simplicity of non-wrestling combat, I think that this could simply be a submenu under the attack options, as in you could still do everything you could do before - just more.

I hope my idea gets considered (and isn't implemented before the wrestling menu gets cleaned up - this would be even worse a mess if the options were shown the same way) and I can't wait for even more advances on the Dwarf Fortress front!

There was an earlier thread on this sort of subject:

Most of what you're asking for is in there. Warning: It's a wall of text and then some.

This is definitely something that I'd want to see.  Makes combat more interesting.

MyLittlePonyBuiltMyHotRod, this is your first warning. I would like to direct you to read our forum's FAQ and posting guidelines before posting again. Specifically we don't use swear words here, and your picture of Stalin riding a Year3 Limited Edition Starflower inside a German concentration camp was both upsetting and historically inaccurate.

Ah, yes, that other thread is pretty much the same thing. Mine's more like a weaponized version of wrestling.

What's kinda weird is I had a similar "weapon arc" idea for a fighting game I was thinking of making (but never actually making, of course). It's also a very good idea, but in my opinion mine is more able to be implemented because it's already mostly there with wrestling. Footkerchief's idea adds even more control to it, which would be awesome.

Thanks for the replies  ;D

The idea of it working with wrestling has merit. It would have to be balanced carefully though, to avoid insta-kills via headshots.

Except insta-kills via headshots are fairly realistic, even from blunt force.  Armor would become more important, and hopefully the new creature bio changes would allow for stuff like really thick skulls that allow creatures like bears and buffalo to take quite a few blows?

I mean even an untrained peasant should be able to bop a macaque on the head and down it pretty quickly.  :p

I'm only OK with this if all sentient creatures have options to do the same thing, and thus allowing dwarves in Fortress mode as well as enemies in both modes to do it.

In which case I'm not OK with it because it would make the game even harder than it is already, in both modes.

Hm... Given that things still have a good deal of maneuverability if you try to grapple them with just one arm, I'd say grab-headshots would be difficult to pull off. Now, someone else grabbing you while another enemy takes aim... That could be effective.

Either way, I do want to see this.
