16x16 or bigger.

4x4 ussually. Sometimes 6x6 if I feel like I need a bigger world.

6X6

It's the set neutral and my comp can handle that with SOME slowdown, but not anything game breaking.

I usually don't go more than 9 tiles.

2x2, 2x3 and 2x4 are my normal fort sizes...

Yah, it sounds like minecraft with content, you have obviously missed the point, people dont like content, they like different coloured blocks.
Seems to work fine with my copy. As soon as I loaded the human caravan came by and the world burst into fire.

I usually stick with 6x6 unless I need an odd shape to get all the map features I want, but I'll use a smaller size if I have plans for a major project and want to maintain a better FPS.

Anywhere between 3x3 and 5x5, but I did do a 3x8 once to fit magma and an underground river into the same fort.

I tend to go with 4x4. Even though my computer can handle bigger, 4x4 usualy keeps things going at a quick pace even when things start getting crowded.

3x3, because that is the size of pre-existing civ settlements.

i like going for a wierd shape i like challenging myself to do a bridge spanning from mountain (as in were talking about 8x2 etc, but also situational, for example i have no qualms about expanding my standard size of 6x6 to 7 or even 8 to get a biome advantage etc. I use site finder but i turn of seeing HFS as it ruins it i think well a tiny bit, but really depends on my mood oreintation and goals, heek i might even modiffy starting monies/ dwarfs if its in context.

but my slice of the world is as mentioned above the default 6x6

one day though i reallly do want to try 1x1

Depends. I expect my CPU to be able to handle bigger areas as well, but even now i see, that the caverns in my recent fortress (beautiful, imho) really lower my FPS...

I usually go for 4x4 to 5x5. The main reason to alter it is to get special areas within range. i once embarked on a... i think it was 6x2 to fit a brook and magma source into the area.

I love to have a landscape, so my selection is commonly huge (and FPS tiny).

I'd settle for smaller areas, if only the non-site area would remain visible on embarkation.
Even if the non-site cannot be altered. but this would be odd: you'd want to cut down those trees just outside your claim. and: in DF you can change anything you see.

I go with 6x6 unless I can't get the features I want.
largest successful map was a 10x8.

4x4 or 5x5 mostly. Sometimes smaller, or sometimes larger, depending on that what features I'll be able to have on site. It's also nice to have room around for towers, castles and such. Though I also want my constructions to be cool, and I often have things like mist-generators that eat up FPS so I try to avoid choosing too large area.
