Anyone who doesn't like Penny Arcade has clearly never seen the He Who Fights Nerds series.






Note that these are four separate comics, over the course of approximately a week.  It's not a VGCats-style hour-long comic ordeal.

VGcats was good for a while... But slowly and surely I just can't stand it anymore... It has a few good pannels left... but I never find it worth it to look through weird. I cannot remember why I stopped liking it... Probably because it became less about the videogames and more about using the videogames as a backdrop.

I don't like Penny Arcade because they are really big fans of baseless defimation (spelled incorrectly)... It doesn't help that whenever I look at their site... I find their Defimation (spelled in correctly again) series of comics that usually go on for about 6 comics... oddly...

I like The Pain

Both because the comics are great but the guy's articles are really well written. I've got completely different viewpoints with the guy, but I can't help but respect his opinions and learn from them.

For example:

I realize that this is an example of Gresham's law, which states that all political parties sink to the level of the worst one, and that by so doing we will become the very thing we affect to despise. Yeah whatever. This is a war for the soul of our nation between, on the one hand, a coalition of fanatical Fundamentalists and cynical Fascists, and, on the other, those dwindling few of us who are still willing to fight for a pluralistic, secular, free society. Our enemies do not want a dialogue; as the aliens in Independence Day said, they just want us to die. Me, I want to win. I want those fuckers beaten, humiliated, disgraced. I want to see them as furious and defeated as I feel every day. I want the Ten Commandments out of the courthouses and back in the children's books where they belong. I want to see gay men getting married on Martha Stewart. I want to see Republican ladies in red dresses and pearls weeping on TV. I want to see the local rednecks slumped over their beers as if gut-shot, angrily wondering what the hell ever happened to this country.

The Death Star is in firing range. We have thirty snub fighters and a two-meter target. Who's with me?

I recommend it.

I like the Penny Arcade articles as well. Tycho Brahe is quite well versed. Again, I hardly ever agree with his sentiments, but they deserve respect due to his ability at delivering a point. I would have preferred to have never seen his real photo though. The illusion of anonymity gives more power to the writer.

I'd like to agree with this sentiment with a couple of my favorites-

...when someone squeezes some Goddamn spider silk out of a goat's titty it's the kind of thing one expects to hear about... I'm making goofy jokes about it because I think that we are a young species that often fucks with things we don't know how to unfuck. It's a coping mechanism.

People seem to think that by posting in threads and agreeing with other people they are changing the world. They are not. They are posting in threads online. The universe will not be altered by forum threads, even those which are very wry. Being outraged online is a form of entertainment, and refreshing a thread to receive a hit of consensus packs the thrill of genuine activism without requiring any sweat. I'm afraid this test may require more from the community than a sardonic jpeg.

But I must agree about having seen the pictures of them being rather disappointing, both for anonymity, and the disturbing reality check they bring.  Mike Krahulik (Gabe) looks like the epitome of the pasty pencil-necked basement-dwelling gamer we all fear ourselves to be.  Jerry (Tycho) looks, by his own description, like something that crawled out of a vat.  That they're both married with children is both astounding and inspiring, until you remember that they are now also very, very rich.
