Peaceful Megabeasts?
« on: January 09, 2009, 04:12:14 pm »

I am interested in modding a "Silver Stag" or "Spectral Stag" or something like that into my game. I would like it to be a megabeast; warning when one is on the map, shows up in legends, etc. But I would not like it to be an evil megabeast; rather, I would like it to only be violent when attacked, and perhaps show up only in good areas.

Is that possible?

[BENIGN] tag may work.

Yes, all creature tags are same for megabeasts.

But WHY in Armoks name would you want to make a fancy-pants, purse swinging, makeup wearing prissy of a megabeast? WHY??

It might even be enough to remove the violent tags: [likes_fighting], [large_predator], etc. [GOOD] would make it only show up in good areas. Benign shouldn't change its behavior, just make it show up in low-savagery areas.

So my dwarves can kill it and use it's (valuable) bones to engrave their worthless trinkets with!

A dragon has come to your fortress to party.

I like this idea, atleast in theory. I think it's reasonable-and atleast 1 Threetoe story alludes-to expect powerful creatures/beings in the benign and neutral spectrums, as well as the evil/cursed.

Infact, creatures like Giants, Bronze Collossi, and Titans, might be considered neutral creatures.

Note, I'm not saying *peaceful*, but it's entirely possible that they might exist.

Hmmm, if a peaceful megabeast is at your fortress when a siege starts, would it help you to defend against the attackers?

I think possibly it would.

I think atleast two main considerations would have to be made to determine what your "peaceful megabeast" would do, though.

1: What kind of relationship do your dwarfs have with the PM?

2: Who or what, exactly, is attacking your dwarfs?

Other questions might come into consideration, like "are children being attacked?", "is the local environment itself in any danger?", "is the PM and/or it's allies (other than your dwarfs) in any real danger?", "would whoever is attacking, also target the PM and/or it's allies?", and "is the PM guarding anything that might be in danger from the attack", etc.

"Peaceful" does not equate "pacifistic". Also, the designation "peaceful" may only mean that it's peaceful towards your dwarfs. Or it may mean that it's in general rather non-hostile, but can be provoked to anger, such as-say-an...elephant or a (gasp) carp!
