Why would a creature have wings if it can't fly? Because it looks cool. ;)
Among other reasons.

They DO have wings. They just don't work. They're just to make them look more scary.

Yes, damn you , I HAVE read LOTR and the the simarillion.

SO: IS DF 3rd age or 1st age?

Oh, I've got a Balrog a year ago... It was my middle-earth mod. Let's see if I can get it.

Ok, it was almost the same, but mine had also [NOEXERT] tag, you may consider to add it. Also it dropped ashes, but yours drops a statue, which is way cool.

Common balrog should be of size 16 or 18. Not 30! Size 30 = ~2-3 sizes of a huge dragon like Smaug.

Also why does your balrog have [NATURAL] tag?!!! Do you want it to walk around eating grass and talking with elves?!

Also, they don't usually fly, so FLIER is a bit out of place.

Why can't your balrog talk? They were twisted maiar but I think they had a language...

Just don't start living in a cave and eating raw fish while fondling a computer with DF on it.

Lol, the only failure here is the fact that somehow the balrog wings argument started in the DF forum.  Honestly, balrogs are awesome, but could benefit so much by waiting for the next release.  I don't think it's worthwhile to just have an arbitrary huge damblock because the creature is scary and awesome.  Frequently in the Silmarillion were balrogs killed.  Durin's Bane, killed by Gandalf in the Fellowship of the Ring is not intended to be a particularly powerful balrog, even.  In any case, they do not single-handedly spell doom for whatever they come across.

We encourage the establishment of awesomeness and look forward to further incarnations of these fiery maiar.

I'm not sure about this but i think,in the silmarillion, only the deaths of two balrogs were mentioned specifically. Both were killed by elves.

I found another link with some good information on Pro/Anti wingism:http://www.glyphweb.com/Arda/b/balrogs.html

I think it's a vastly amusing thought that elephants are so afraid of heights that when Dwarves invented the Z-axis, they couldn't bear to face dwarves in combat anymore.

Actually, if I recall, the question of whether balrogs actually had wings, or were simply surrounded by flickering, wing-like shadows, was never firmly resolved before Tolkien's death.
