The fortress of Gugirarad, or Copperdrum (hehe, timpani) is coming along nicely. I've finished up the basic outline of the outer wall and turrets. They're not done by a long shot, as I'm planning on making them three tiles thick with three story turrets, but they keep out the goblins. The gate house is still my main living area, but I've managed to construct an inn near it with some rooms. Only 14 in an almost 100 person castle, but it'll do for now while I make the keep. Yep, I've started the keep, but right now it's just a single wall with doubles here and there. I also had a goblin ambush a few months ago, but my 12 champion wrestlers handled them easily.

I want to take a screenshot of the whole thing, but my screen's not big enough. Can I export an image or something?

Also use period construction ideas for bouns points i'll drop one for you, is that medival walls wern't hollow, filled with water etc was out of the world it was simply filled in with either ruble or more stone.

And some more period information, on most castles of the 1400's outer walls were usally about double the thickness of inner walls.

I suggest doing some research as i have allready done mine (about half a days worth+ loads of previous research + knowlege) who knows you might be awarded bonus points for even seting up something like a games area (period of course)

One problem with aboveground construction is that wood is used in massive quantities.

the only solution, besides settling in a dense forest is trading for it.
I'm not really a fan of the 'planking' suggestion; the use of one log for one tile of flooring is fine to me, fractional use of wood for small items such as crafts has my support though. :)
As well as bigger trees, that take more time to cut down, consist of more than one tile and provide more than one log.
orchard trees (or build tree seed/sapling in spot X) that can be picked for fruits/nuts also has my support.

erm...castles yes.
I'm currently building a classic 'walled coaching inn'.
only the location is more fitting for an evil tower, perched on an outcropping clinging to the side of a volcanic mountain. (with a bottomless chasm running along the eastern edge)

I need to get my palisade done soon.
If I wall myself off the orcs cant come and kill me.
I'll open it up when I can, but for now it's building time.

Alright, curtain wall down. Much quicker than I thought it would be. Currently only one z-level and made of rough stone but considering that I'll surround it with blocks it should not be a problem.

The keep/manor will be more of an everlasting construction as workshops and the great hall need to be made. Small makeshift chapel will be made in the third year if I can rig it.

I might just use drawbridges for my gates. From what I remember, there was a castle somewhere from the Crusades that had several gatehouses with pits that required drawbridges to cross. Don't think of using the pits to access the castle: they can be flooded.

It's taking forever for me to get to the end of the first year; my computer is being superslow and it's really getting to me. That said, I've finished my tavern, which will eventually be the basis for the keep. It is made of Rhyolite Block walls, and assorted wood block floor, and can dine and house 20 dorfs.

Gobbo ambush + tantrum spiral = crazy malicious.

If I didn't know I was building an ultimate defense machine I'd cry.
Cant wait to build a castle in the army arc.

...Farmer cancels rest:went insane

The future of the fort rests on a seclusive legendary Mason Book keeper who never left the basement for a year who didn't like anyone and didn't mind they died.

Praise Armok. When I'm at the temple stage he's getting SUCH A NICE MOSAIC.

The elf merchant threw himself into a dry lake to avoid a berserking mason ( the hatefuls one's lover)

Losing is fun.

I learned that tantruming dwarves can level up the thrower skill.

 Hmm...

While I know the number of fields I'm going to have inside my walls is sufficient for normal DF play(12 5x5 plots), I wonder if I can drastically reduce the output of these fields. That and find a way for them all to be cultivated.

I really want to find a way to have a small town outside the castle walls, just because the castle itself is for emergency uses in itself.

Tavern complete, migrant wave arrived. I turned on partial print and my framerate has skyrocketed, to my delight. So now I'm in the process of building an archery range, and a second housing block.

Alright, a little small. Just paste in Paint and zoom in a bit.

This should be my final plan. Added:

-Modifications to Main Gate, Cathedral and Manor/keep.
 -Middle-class area, made of stone.
 -Great Hall.

So yes, seeing as all of these things are internal I can continue will the main wall.

Might need to pull an all-nighter to achieve the deadline.

Hurk, three days left.
These damn orcs and goblins give me ONE season a year to work in.
After I get a complete wood wall this'll fly by, but  >:(
