I have a sweatshop of masons cranking out blocks for my castle, and the first wave of wall and floor construction left a serious amount of vomit all over the entrance to my underground portion. Poor little sick dwarves :(

Alright, I'm doing this the Human way.

I'll try to replicate the designs of photographs of castles to the best of my abilities. That means towers, gates and halls will appear in DF like they should be. There will be nobody living in caves for extended periods of time without a window of sorts. If windows cannot be made, fortifications will be used. All stone mining shall be from open air quarrying. metal mining may use mining shafts, but not large ones. Furniture and most second-story floors shall be made of wood.

Let us see how this turns out. Designing structure now.

Building a stone keep out of blocks. Then after that, I build more awesome goodies.

My question is...since I just signed up, do I have until the END of the week, or a week in total to do this? My time is limited after all.

Nice idea for a contest, I like building forts aboveground too.

Could you make a clear list of the competition-required parts that do make sense in DF?

The toilet for instance is just a useless invasion route for pitdwellers in DF.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I'd say: give seperate points for each 'part', that is in a constructed fort.
ranging from 0to3 (none< minimal< adequate< masterwork)

Plus have a shortlist of minimally required parts such as 'wall', 'barracks', 'gateway', 'siege survivability'

a fort with a small outside village for the craftsdwarves would be eligable for bonuspoints IMHO. ;)

@ duke2.0 : say, you can get stone floors and ceilings when you employ buttresses, you know. :)

Well, some buildings will be stone. All domes and outside architectural things can be stone. However, most roofs, poor person structures and walkways will be wood. Drawbridges shall be wood. Only important people get stone coffins, and then only good quality coffins. Everybody gets a casket and a grave.

 Edit:
Plans for floor one, still under construction. Still need to add housing for the peasantry, the grand hall and possibly a barracks or prison tower. Still some defenses to plan out, but the moat will be tricky, as well as plumbing. There WILL be a water source inside the castle walls.

Also, castle walls will require rounding out. Square walls are boring, but diagonal walls... I think I'll stick with curves. Any help would be appreciated. Also note most of these inaccessible towers will be accessed from the top of the wall, and the general plan for reaching the top of the wall is on the Northwest tower. Just a progression of ramps.

 Black: Walls.
 Brown: Wooden walls.
Yellow and dark yellow: Stairs and ramps.
 Red: Doors.
Blue: Workshops, including the trade depot.
 Grey: Roads.

Rather than having them directly force you to mine adamantine, I would suggest that they give you strange moods that require adamantine. "Dig out the adamantine or Urist here goes insane and dies" is suitably vicious.

(It occurs to me that you can probably get "Lovecraft" as the random name of your fortress. That's when you know you're screwed.)

Any plans for those wooden constructions on top of walls etc?

I've finally managed to install the latest updated version some tilesets and graphics, hopefully I haven't screwed anything up: I want to carve out a keep!

lol.

no trees either then? (quite a challenge to build an entire site out of wood only)
and on the plus side: with an aquifier building digging wells is easy.
