A question regarding dwarwen intelligence and metal industry.
« on: January 08, 2009, 07:17:44 pm »

Why is it impossible for them to make one of these:

Yes, it is made from metal and yes, it is a bed.

P.S. Optional: what do I have to mod to make it possible.

Dwarves are kinda dumb... Rock beds are the way to go, though. Save your metal for more important things.

'less metal beds are really that important...

Yeah really. Awesome Dining Halls > Bedrooms.

Well actually for dwarves. Awesome Dining Halls > sex.

You should be able to make beds out of rock and some sort of Dwarven matress.

Dining halls also preform the actions of sex, thus reducing non working time and explaining the spore mating.

To answer the OP, it was something of a game balance decision by Toady that beds could only be made of wood, so you'd have to obtain wood to house your dwarves.  This was a little more important in the early versions of DF where underground treefarming was near universal.  It's certainly not a design decision everyone agrees with, and Toady hasn't said anything about it, so who know what he thinks.

Whatever, but the OP is right.  :) Dwarves should be able to make metal beds.
Well not that this is so important, but ah well...

Well, where I live, most people's beds are essentially a cloth mattress on the floor they roll up when not in use. I want cloth beds.

One of the better ideas I heard was to combine them into an actual construction.  Wood or metal (or stone) frame, and cloth bedding.

Id like to see this, or at least beds that can have cloth sheets added on to them to increase value, nobles could refuse to sleep on a simple frame like they do now. Metal beds seem reasonable, barrels and bins can be made from only metal and wood, I think beds are the ONLY wood only construction, possibly make it high requirements? 3 bars? or something additional? its Toady's decision anyway.

The only problem I see with making more... realistic beds (as in with cloth+frame) is building an early bed industry. But surely dwarves won't tantrum until that elven caravan arrives or the first crop of pig tails is processed.

Sheets?
Matresses?

A dwarf needs not these things! For dwarves, wood is soft enough.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

Dwarven spines are completely straight.

A flat slab of wood is Dwarven memory foam.

For dwarves, nothing is too hard except for adamantium.

Dwarves are dwarvy dwarven dwarves.

EDIT: Now with extra dwarf!
