On replacing war dogs.
« on: January 07, 2009, 08:36:45 pm »

War dogs are powerful, but I find them cliche.

I prefer to use hordes of wolves to tear the goblins and elves to shreds. They may not be trainable in vanilla, but the extra challange is fun! Anyway, a normal wolf seems to be the equal of a war dog any day of the week. Here's my question, what other animals do you guys use to replace man's (not dwarf's) best friend?

Giant Eagles- no, too hard to train, how about Giant Pigeons- no, though they are great fighters, easy to train, and are pretty good sentry animals ( can easily find driftwood in an turbulent ocean at 2500 feet ) , but they breed faster than cats... how about- Automatons!

-Still no, erm, ... ... Wolverines!!!

They are like Bears combined with Badgers and Skunks, they are fast like a bear ( which can maintain 30 mph for a long time ) , nimble as a badger ( eats gophers, rabbits and prairie dogs ) , and has the ability to give off noxious fumes at will!!!

Gorillas, watching them tear off someones arms and then beat him to death with them... sigh, good times

Giants cats. Giant leopards, giant tigers, and giant lions. Giant tigers and lions are size 11 and giant leopards are size nine. You can find them in savage tropical areas or trade them from the elves. Giant desert scorpions are a lot of fun too, but they are PET_EXOTIC.

I think it's a vastly amusing thought that elephants are so afraid of heights that when Dwarves invented the Z-axis, they couldn't bear to face dwarves in combat anymore.

Actually, the RAW's shown on the Wiki show Wolves being basically the same thing as dogs, only wild and called wolves.

Army of groundhogs. Imagine, hundreds of groundhogs swarming over you, biting, scratching...

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

I've done Giant Eagles before. The fact that they could fly was cool; but they weren't all that useful. I had invasions turned off for most of it though, so...

My current fortress Im doing giant war eagles.  They seem to be decent, managed to kill some kobolds that got stuck up on a wall and that my marksdwarves wouldnt kill ::)

Did use elephants once. Unfortunately I never bothered to edit the raws so that they grew up faster and was limited to what I caught in traps.

I also love using giant cats.

....They just refuse to stay down unless butchered, in which case their skins will haunt you until you subdue and tan them. Never has legendary butcher and legendary tanner seemed so valueable as in this release.

One of themain components of my unfinished zefie mod. Along with war-warthogs. It was great fun, becuase every zefie was attended by two war-hogs (ground for normal people, warts for important ones). I ran into a problem with the hogs being too slow though. That quickly became a pathing nightmare.

I've only modded it so Bears, Giant eagles, woulves and tigers are trainable.

However, If you live in a tropical area...

War cats. No, not the pants-wettingly terrifying ones like jaguars. I'm talking about the cute and cuddly wuddly ones. Not only will they take care of small vermin like rats and lizards, they'll take care of larger vermin. Like elves. Whenever the cat population gets too high, assign some war cats to your soldiers.

I was pretty happy with my giant gorilla swarm but they had a habit of killing everything before my military could even get off their lazy pint sized arses.  I also like tossing pows into a big wooden "barrel" full of chimps.
