I had this goblin fortress surrounded by forest on three sides. It seems that they ALWAYS went to war with the local elves. The thing is, they only had about twenty goblins and about the same (or higher!) number of elves. They were attacked by forces of about three hundred elves. Average losses?

D: 0-4

Apparently goblins can be Spartans too.

Nop, the elves are weak pussies, so that war result is not really suprising.

My elves must be different since they consistently win their battles with losses smaller than the defenders

Other than their big, shiny demon mascot (which was almost certainly dead and eaten by that point) goblins don't have that much going for them either. Even a good, hearty worldgen dwarf fortress should be suffering higher casualties than that. The goblins must have squeezed out a few legendaries back while they still had infernal protection.

equip your dwarfs with wood weapons only, and you will see there is a sight different in the strength to goblins with iron weapons

I genned a world where there was a goblin dark fortress that was under siege by dwarven invaders for about a century. The demon who became the sole defender very early in the war had a little more than four hundred kills to his name. The coolest part was that entire families of named dwarves (mostly from hunting, unfortunately) threw themselves on this demon generation after generation, and the demon obliterated all of them.

The demon eventually died, probably from a lucky shot.

Has to do with the fact that while there are only 20 goblins all of them are Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Hulk, Batman, or similarly built.

The elves on the other hand, are like zerglings.

Had a siege where the elfs attacked and almost killed sacked a human village. The defenders had 4 elfs on their side for some reason. Maybe they got tired of the endless slaughter and changed sides?

Maybe one of the Gobbos was a Goblin Mohawk?
