I've had similar problems with Thief 2 over and over.  The game always ran just fine, but getting the videos to play was always a crapshoot for some reason.  Some weird method of the developer's devising that new computers don't like I suppose.

I know it's a bit of a hassle, but if you must view the cutscenes, you could always use Youtube.

Well holy crap, I dug out Thief 2 with a mind to get those codecs, and the orb of zot and whatever the hell else I needed, and it worked right off the bat.

Heh.

Recently I was playing the DF MU*, and kept hitting t before typing in chat. today I keep almost prefixing chat with "say".

Wait, there's a DF MU*?  That's the first time I ever heard of it.  Where?

Yep. Not sure if it's still being developed, but the MUD itself is still up. The last post was on the 12. The first post after the link has the connection info.

There wasn't much DF-like about it when it was started as it just had the stock area for people to screw around in. Certain commands had to be coded by Tahin. It's not actually called Dwarf Fortress MUD, but that's what it should eventually turn into.

Maybe not a game, but I keep trying to use the mouse gestures from opera in other browsers.

And once I tried to prevent the screensaver from coming up when I was studying out of a book.

Well, I found out there was a whole expansion-pack thingy for thief 2. Look up T2X. I still think the blackjack replacement was stupid.

Monster Hunter for PS2. Wonderful, wonderful game. Dead for over a year now (servers taken down). My heart is still broken over that...

Anyway, it had pretty wonky controls that took me a long time to get used to. Once I did, though, they became so ingrained that I still find myself using them for other games. Some parts I got over pretty fast (what, you mean I can't attack with the control stick?) Other things I'm still doing today, like trying to control cameras in every single 3D console game by turning my character and mashing an L button to center it, thanks to MH's almost-entirely-manual camera controls. It works alright in some games, but it's not really...necessary.

In the spilling-into-real-life realm, after a week-long marathon of Oblivion, I felt compelled to rip up every flower I saw outside for a while, thanks to my obsessive alchemy-componant-collection in the game.

I have yet tried to use game controls in real life, but once after watching too much Keroro gunsou I ended up ending a sentence with "De arimasu". That was embarrassing.

After a marathon of Dungeon Crawl, I once caught myself trying to press 'o' to go to the next item in the "Show new replies to your posts" list. It's quite stupid, but true.

After I played DF for long enough I kept trying to use the spacebar to pause games. It didn't work so well on Warcraft III when I hit the spacebar and walked away to go to the bathroom, only to return and find the enemy busy leveling my main base.

I was playing Mirror's edge after a long run at Prince of Persia. You can guess what the results were.

Arteries severed by sharp shards of glass, followed by copious amounts of blood. Maybe a critical hit to the spine...

What!
