Most of my games are wasd.

So when back when I got Tribes 2 with it's weird esdf control set,I had plenty of fumbling around.

I think the most common control scheme to get "unused to" would be the Supreme Commander scheme.

I really hate how I can't zoom out or use the shift key to do everything in other games.

After reading everyone going on about Supreme Commander I decided to play it, and I have to say the strategic zoom doesn't seem that useful to me. I've mainly been using it as an alternative to the minimap. On the bright side though I finally decided to start on the Core campaign having finished Arm years ago but never having got round to Core.

I still look for my visibility gem and turn lights off all the time. It annoys the heck out of my family.

Ha ha, Thief...  I remember I found a way that you could creep along any surface (albeit at a pathetically slow pace) and not make any noise at all.  Also, your stride would be ridiculously long, with your foot touching the ground once every couple seconds.

Yeah, tapping the forward key. Saved my arse in the bank mission dozens of times.

Did anyone else felt let down when the alarm in the bank vault went off, and you walked out the side door of the building without repercussions?

What I found was that crouched and sneaking, you made virtually no noise as long as you never kept moving for longer than one full step.  I also noticed that if you pressed forward and sidestep at the same time, you'd make no more noise but you'd glide quarterways faster than just normal forward.  The only problem was my keyboard could only read so many keys at once - I could walk right this way, but not left because it wouldn't recognize the A key.

First Bank and Trust was the best designed level in any FPS ever.  I came up with so many different strategies.  No wonder why all my FPS controls since have modeled it's system.

My favorite was
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
although
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
is also a good one.

Unfortunatly, I can't get Thief to work on my machine. It's the cinematics, somehow, since if I use it in "safe mode" it's just got to mission 1 and skip the cinematics. Yeah. Which sucks. Anyone help me with that?

Damn, that's tough.  The cinematics were badass.

You've tried the various compatibility modes, right?  I mean, it is kind of an old game.  I'm sure there must be some sort of fix for this, just do a quick search.

You may need the Indeo Video 5 codecs. I got Thief working right. Be sure to alt-tab out of it as soon as you get to the main menu, and set its CPU affinity to just one CPU/core if you've got more than 1. Then switch back and you can play.
