Need some advice on Elona from some Elona players
« on: January 06, 2009, 11:41:35 am »

Hi,

I started playing Elona and actually I am enjoying it but at the same time its very hard, what I ended up doing was copying my save folder when I wasn't sure if I would manage a mission.

My pet is a little girl and my character is a lich mage.

I checked the wiki for Elona but I am not to impressed with it. I love the game though but really need more tips/input. I am currently level 4, I did as suggested in the wiki and am running delivery missions from vernis to palmia and also run from the rogue town to port kapul. The problem now though is there seems to be less delivery missions and more hunting missions, now these are kinda hit and miss, a big part of that is that I never have the amount of spells I would like and sometimes you could be battling with somethimng, taking no damage then "wham" one hit kill and if I dont back up my saves I would be a criminal which is game over since letting the guards kill you over and over does not increase karma again, contrary to what is written.

I really want to continue futher with this game but I need to know how I can get spellbooks more regulary , also many times reading them I dont get any spells from them so I increase literacy. I would like to be able to do the harvest missions as well but I know I will fail them, I mean what is it you do to harvest exactly? Go over a fruit and click enter? Its just every time I do that I get interrupted by some mob, rinse repeat, time up and yes its that fast! I would like to get good at harvesting so I assume I need gardening? Also the party ones, the way I read the wiki anyone can just go and play the paino or cook but at least in my game it doesnt work like that, you need to learn to cook and play an instrument but I am unsure of how to get this realistically done bearing in mind I am not getting near enough easy delivary missions to make the kind of platinum and money I need to get any skills so with all this in mind what would people suggest? (Kinda stuck at the momment)

Heres my gear (btw I have started getting regular item identification and all my stuff is identified, its also at the point where I cant drop any more items in my house) :

A Scale Leather Hat [5,1] <----is this 5 protection value or something?
A Howling silk decorative amulet (It maintains speed, grants resistance to mind)
A cloth light cloak [1,0]
A cloth robe+1 [4,0] <-------once again still not 100% on these modifiers which probably means I am getting crap gear
A silver Wakizashi (4d3+1) (4)  <-------4 dice, 3 sides? + 1 to final value on any role? Also whats (4)
2 * Bronze engagement ring, grants resistance to lightning
A cloth girdle [1,0]
A pair of silk shoes [2,0]
A blessed magical  bronze shortbow (3d5)(1) Uses differant brackets  I guess these indicate dice roles?
^^^maintains speed, maintains perception, improves shield skill, resistance to lightning

A glass arrow (1d7) (4)

Heres my current stats:
str 1    (1)  Not sure what these values in brackets mean
con 9   (9)
dex 7   (7)
per 13 (13)
ler 13 (13)
wil 21 (21)
mag 28 (28)
char 2 (2)

Combat rolls:

melee1   4d3+1 x 0.8  <----need deciphered   hit 88%
dist       3d5+4 x 0.8                           hit 61%
prot       9% + 1d4      evade 46%

misc:

Life 80
mana 145 (140)   <---curious what the differance means
sanity 0
speed 74
fame 354
karma -4

There is also a funny icon/image/small pic to the lower left of my character portrait on this screen, what does that mean?

Extra Info:

Cargo wt: 96s
Cargo Lmt: 80s
Equip wt: 7.0s (light)
Deepest Lvl: 3

Hint: This character has no bless or hex

I just really need advice that will help me play this game better also is it possible to learn cooking, playing the paino , harvesting without spending 15plat on the skill?

Thanks :)

Not sure what these values in brackets mean
12 - base (12) - current

[5,1] <----is this 5 protection value or something?
5 = dodge modifier, 1 = damage reduction modifier; first value affects how likely you are to dodge the attack and 2nd is how many damage will be absorbed by armor if you're hit. You'd better focus on a single value, either making a damage resistant suit or dodgin suit, however damage reduction is always good.

I need to know how I can get spellbooks more regulary
There're some random-generated dungeons where you get different level every time you dive in. Just keep going in and out until you see a spellbook near the entrance. Continue this repeatedly, gaining basic gear almost for free. If there's a terrible monster you can always just go out and return into a different dungeon immideately.

I would like to be able to do the harvest missions
It's the most save-scumming requireable job for me. You want to kill all the critters in the area firsts and then try to pick the biggest vegetables possible and put them in the harvest box.

Also, try to use main elona thread, you won't be unnoticed.

While this would be better posted in the current elona thread, i'll do my best to help you, though i've not played much on Elona recently or slept much for that matter, so this may be a little inaccurate, though nothing that won't point you in the way that you "need" pointing in anyway. i'm sure someone'll help by pointing out where i've made mistakes, anyway.

First things first, the missions are hit and miss as you've noticed, but some towns get more of certain types - that as far as i'm aware is more harvesting in Yowen and more Performance ones in Palmia. Beyond that, i don't think there's really much way of getting more escort type missions beyond just checking each towns board when you arrive.

The issue with dying over and over like that's something you'll run into, but if you train up your character with things that increase Con, that'll help - though as anything bar a warrior type, for the most part, i'd recommend dual shields, a laser pistol and decent armour (best kept 'Light' as a mage to avoid more casting penalties, that you can check what level of armour encumberance you're at in your character sheet.) that given you're a mage, will lower your spell chance a little if i recall correctly due to the shields in both hands.

Shield Skill + Healing + More Con based skills being trained = More HP and more Defence, after all.

Spellbooks, as a mage can be obtained by joining the mages guild in... Lumiest is it? and then giving them the spellbook that you wish to buy more copies of, or something to that effect. Other than that, you can stair-scum in the puppy cave to get spellbooks by going up/down floors repeatedly and grabbing books near the stairs, or, you can invest in a shop and increase the level of it, that when done with the magic type vendors, means they can stock higher power spellbooks. Mages guild still, assures you get a specific type, from what i hear.

Harvesting/Performing i'd not worry about until you're able to hold your own and perform quests/clear easier dungeons without too much issue, as by that point you can start gaining the platinum a lot more readily to buy and train up the skills.

Gardening and Strength i believe increase the speed with what you can uproot plants in harvesting quests, but it's always best to clear the immediate area so you can havest in peace, otherwise you get interrupted and have to start pulling the item up again.

With your armour, the first number is the evasion bonus the item gives and the second the protective value it gives, thus, your [5,1] hat gives a +5 evasion modifier and +1 protection modifier. Blessed items give +2 to protection and i -think- evasion atop that, unless they're weapons, in what case it relates to hit/damage.
With your weapon, the 4d3 is the hit dice, the +1 is damage added after the dice roll and the number in brackets after that is the hit chance. if they're square brackets, as with defender weapons and the like, then the weapon also adds protection.

with your stats, the number in brackets after the first number is your base skill, i believe, where as the first number can be higher/lower due to buffs/drains in effect.

The 0.8 after your melee figure is your damage multiplier, that's based on a combination of Tactics and Strength - you, as a mage do not have tactics, and so the 0.8 means you're doing 80% damage. The same goes for your distance skill, only it's a different skill (marksman) for that and i'm not entirely certain if it's perception or agility or anything at all stat wise that adds a touch more to that multiplier. the hit part is your base hit chance, against an enemy with zero evasion, that means later enemies can still be missed with 150% hit chance. protection is your armour's damage reduction, and evade is your base evade chance, vs an enemy with no bonus hit chance.

Life 80, refers to you having 80% of the hitpoints a 'normal' person would have, where as Mana at 140 means that you get 140% of the mana, in this case. the bracketed 145 means that you've got (most likely from a perk.) another 5% mana capacity atop that. I'm not sure of the exact mechanics behind how much magic/hit points these two translate into based on level and stats however.

your also overweight with your cargo, that means that you'll move much slower on the overworld map, so keeping that under your limit's a good idea - anything up to your limit with cargo items gives no penalty after all.

finally, no, you need to spend platinum not just to learn the skill, but to also increase your learning rate of it, as you buy it at 50% rate.

hope that's of help, explaining those things for you.

Yes all that helps great :) Thanks!

I haven't slept much over the NY either, loved my time off :)

In hindsight I think I remember seeing and Elona specific thread, I will definatly post in that one from now on, sorry about that and thanks for the replies.

I keep hearing much about the puppy cave so Im going to seek that out asap, also I think with me overweighting my cargo that could have been a factor as to why I was getting caught more on recent escort missions lately ? Im going to try and get that down a bit.

Btw what are those cargo of ragdolls about and such things?

I don't bother with cargo, sometimes not even travelers food, but from what I put together it is just a way of gaining extra cash by draging crap around and not getting held up by highway bandits if you aren't fast enough to run away.

Baisically, fish cargo sells highest in Noyel and Noyel crap sells highest in Port Kapul. (unchecked as of now; again I just don't bother here.)

It is just a stylised triangle trade or delivery mission without a proper destination where gains are determined by getting as far as possible without being held up at your current equipment quality.

PS: puppy cave is the tower beside Vernis.
