mass production of fish?
« on: January 05, 2009, 08:15:14 pm »

So I was making a moat attached to a river, and I noticed that a large amount of fish were swimming in the moat I made.  I got to thinking: if a river was redirected so that a lot of water went through grates or bars (which I assume fish can't go through) would the fish be trapped and stuck there?  If the dwarves could swim there (or the water was drained) they could they catch them or pick them up and use them like regularly caught fish.  I imagine only a small percentage of fish that swim through a river are normally caught by dwarves, so if properly set up huge amount of fish could be harvested very quickly.  Almost like putting a giant net through the river.  Has anyone tried this?

The vermin fish you see aren't the kind you eat

Well I haven't but I saw a quote on the front page of the wiki that suggests that you may beable to make animals at a smelter (or whereever the reaction raws go to) if you mod it correctly. This I am curious about.

yeah, the fish you catch are a vermin class of creature.  very small.  the kind of fish that sho up as "units" are big, which are not prepared at a fishery, i dont think.

But I do think you can butcher them.  lure them into you pen, drain the water, and butcher them.

Of course, you could also use this to CAGE them, and then unleash them against your enemies (because drowning isnt good enough).

Carps, Lamprey, Pike etc, Large fishes that appear on the 'U'nit list - Vicious bastards - Are the only kind of fish that your method would work on.
And you do need a butchery to process them.

HOLD ON! would it be possible to divert an infested fresh water river into a giant nonstop dwarven atom smasher room, and get rid of all the fish that way?

I gotta try this. i must try this.

You might be able to catch those vermin fish from the 'catch live fish' job at the fishery. If your fisherdwarves ever get tired of dredging up dead fish...

You can set cage traps into a moat, fill it with water and let the fish in, then move the cages into another area. You have to do it quickly though because the fish can drown without water.

Wait what? Don't grates stop vermin? If not can I "filter" a channel to have a killer carp free fishing place?

I always just found it peculiar that the police are always able to pin the crime on you 100 percent of the time. The fact that organized crime rings exist at all without being bombed to hell by the national guard is evidence enough that this is not strictly the case in reality.

Yes.
I've even had "vermin" fish swiming around in a reservoir supplied by multiple pumps, so anything that keeps the carp away will do
