I fully endorse Dwarves comming back to life to finish their artifacts!

He couldn't get his shells so he comes back and makes this out of the fortress:

"This is Sighdeep the Eternal Woe, a gigantic shell. It is made from dwarves. It menaces with spikes of dwarves. All craftspookship is of the deadliest quality."

Evil/cursed lands lends (un-)naturally to dead rising, but given that dwarves really fixates on stuff I still think a seriously determined/mad/miserable/vengeful dwarf should have a chance of coming back in other regions too.

If I wanted to recreate the world of one of my favorite stories, I should be able to specify that there is a civilization called Groan, ruled by Earls from a castle called Gormanghast.
You won't have trouble supplying the Countess with cats, or producing the annual idols to be offerred to the castle. Every fortress is a pale reflection of Ghormenghast..

A good chance of Dwarves comming back to life wishing to finish their artifacts should come from abandoned Fortresses!

they could be there as a ghost... asking for stuff... You give it to them... they make the artifact :D

Only idea so far that I like

Adds nice flavor to adventure mode

Yeah, Necromantic-sphered land should have that. Not to mention, once they finish their artifact, perhaps they go about killing your populace with it?

Though... I also think the undeadness should only be caused by the death of a miserable dwarf... Perhaps differences in personality could come into account. Depressed, passive dwarves could mope around meeting areas once in a blue moon and make people sad. Angry ones could unleash the power of hell.

Tantrum spiral -> zombie spiral? :)

Reminds me a bit of the book "The Fire Sea" of Margeret Weiss and Tracy Hickman's Death Gate Cycle, where almost the entire population are undead. The living and (un)dead are two communities keeping apart. The entire state of affairs is REALLY depressing for everyone.

Don't forget that everytime they raised someone, a living person somewhere else died untimely...

Having possesions serve as a "second chance" at artifact creation sounds cool

I don't see why possessions result in happy thoughts though, seeing how every dwarf will ever only get one chance to make an epic idea come to fruition

Guess it's more about making a artifact than your artifact

Hmm, if the game was ever changed so you need some actual skill in a profession to get a fey mood (say, master-grand master dwarves only, legendary status being only achievable with artifacts), possessions could occasionally happen to the untrained and poorly skilled peasants. The masters of old coming back to the mortal coil to finish their life's work. Labor would be randomly picked and the peasant would get a thought about being honored for being chosen to complete the life's work of a dead artisan or something, instead of just the same vanilla message about making an artifact

What about undead nobles?  :o An annoying, oh, lets say baron gets tossed off your killing tower. Due to the evilness of his soul and the surroundings, he climbs back up, now a zombie, kills his replacement, and starts to lead your fortress down a bad road.

Or a really nasty Hammerer turning into a zombie and starts to kill stuff.

On the flip side, the spirit of a beloved leader could come back and make your dwarves happy, while not being a needy pain.

^ That was in fact one of the thing I had in mind when thinking about dwarves returning to unlife, a way to make nobles more difficult to terminate. They might rise again, this time resistant to death and quite likely mad or morbid.

A alternative way of achieving the same end would be if enraged or hateful dwarves would in their moment of death make a pact with evil and return as undead or daemonic, but certainly evil and raging.

Quoting from another thread because it totally belongs here:

Except that I can totally see nobles mandating that fallen dwarven heros are called to service again, much like the dreadnoughts from Warhammer 40k.  The highest dwarven honor isn't some sissy elven rest, it's being called to the fight even after death!

That'd be fantastic, if legendary dwarf heroes could rise in response to the plight of the fortress, or even better, if their hated nemesis and cause of death approach.

An extremely cool effect would be if the system was flexible enough that if a dead dwarf that had murdered another dwarf would rise, the murdered dwarf would rise to wreak retribution on him. Or if the murderer was interred in the same tomb as the murdered, the victim would rise to protest or rage against the posthumous insult...

It is all a matter of perspective. It isn't so much "Someone is using my body against my will" it is more like channeling and become a vessal.

Though it would be interesting if later you could find out what possessed the Dwarf (perhaps in adventure mode) and it could turn out to be gods, demons, ghosts, or other unique creatures.

Dwarves randomly getting back up would take a dump on the concept of death

So? :P If it isn't more common than fey moods, or if only under come harsh circumstances, then I see no problem with it.

I had to think of the Thief-Series. There were a lot undeads there and they were mostly in places, were bad things happened - and surely they weren't just alive again but really just mindless zombies, killing everything in their way.

Maybe if dwarfes do nog get buried they come back. This would put those tombs to a real us at last.
Maybe the size of a tomb could be related to how skillfull the dwarf was - if it is too small for its greatness he will come back to threaten your fortress until you either bring him down or give him a fitting tomb with engravings and statues and whatnot.
