Dead Dwarves Rising - Happy Thoughts
« on: January 05, 2009, 03:57:14 pm »

I think a dwarf that died with unhappy thoughts (or mad!) should have a chance to rise again as an undead or spirit. Perhaps a dwarf that died happy might be a beneficial spirit, but it is easier to envisage the reason for and consequences of unhappy (or MAD!) living dead/spirits.

Also, if the dead dwarf was not fully pissed enough to go berserk in his unlife he should go around spreading unhappy thoughts (and miasma), especially amogn relatives and friends. And the (re-)killing of him should also cause negative thoughts.

If he IS pissed enough to seek plentiful vengeance then he should spread death and destructing in addition to the unhappiness of above :)

Supposedly dead creatures used to rise in the 2D version (possibly in an unreleased early build, I'm not sure).

He'd have to be miserable for evil undead and ecstatic for good undead.  Nothing in between, because that wouldn't justify returning.

A really funny possibility would be a dwarf that died mad for not being able to make his artefact returning to unlife to finish it, this time though in a morbid mood. A really, really morbid mode... On steroids.

Nuff' said that Armok would be VERY pleased with the resulting artefact...

That was possibly one of the coolest ideas you ever came up with Mike!

I fully endorse Dwarves comming back to life to finish their artifacts!

You know what would be even cooler? Dead dwarves coming back to life to finish their artifacts, and using themselves in the construction.

My personal opinion is, that things like these shouldn't happen like this. Necromancy/Dark Arts must be involved in a way or another.

I have found very few supernatural settings where Undead and ghosts couldn't be formed without the aid of magic.

In fact... Dwarf Fortress KINDA COUNTS... Though in essence it doesn't

It counts because Spherical Lands arn't tied to the magic system

It doesn't count because in essence it is still kinda magical anyhow... even if it isn't called "Magic"

Though Id want it to be rare outside of being on a land where Zombies can form.

I like to think that the cause of the possessed mood are dwarves that died by not being able to complete their moods while they were alive :)

So they come back, take the control of some dwarf, and try create something epic.

It would be nice if that was what caused possessed moods.

Despite the fact that sphere-related areas (instead of pure good/evil) is slated for the future, I think it'd be best if undead rising was limited to undead-evil areas; other evil areas could have things like plagues, possession, ghost weapons, werewolves...

Too bad as having a particularly vicious or mentally troubling death would be great!

Now this is a good idea actually. Necromancy -for example- wouldn't be needed in this case, since your idea makes sense.  :)

Yeah, Necromantic-sphered land should have that. Not to mention, once they finish their artifact, perhaps they go about killing your populace with it?

Though... I also think the undeadness should only be caused by the death of a miserable dwarf... Perhaps differences in personality could come into account. Depressed, passive dwarves could mope around meeting areas once in a blue moon and make people sad. Angry ones could unleash the power of hell.
