Died of Natural Causes?
« on: January 03, 2009, 06:15:34 pm »

I'm a bit curious about this...

Is it even possible for any dwarf, human, or Elf( >:() to die from natural causes?

I"ve never heard of this happening, EVER.

Do people just drop dead or something? has it ever even happened?

It's slightly possible, but dwarves have long life-spans.

Only in Dwarf Fortress would you try to catch a mermaid to butcher her and make trophies out of her bones

What about humans and elfs? do they die to?

And how does it happen, do the drop dead out of nowhere?

Yes, they just die abruptly of old age. Had it happen to a human liason once

Elves never die of old age in vanilla. Neither do goblins. Or donkeys and mules for that matter

Currently there's no disease or consequences of eating nothing but tallow roasts and dwarven sugar all day. One day the dwarves shall die of heart attacks and bowel obstructions

Just hope it doesn't get too realistic:

Cog gearswatch, mechanic, has gotten Lymphoma

Urist Swampsspawns, Miner, has Dung Fever

Kogan Tremorsvoid, Farmer, has gotten Shingles

Actually, after writing that, i take that back, i would want to see that.

Diseases would make the game impossible.

Disease spreads out of no-where.
Lots of dorfs die.
Dorfs get angry that their semi-half-brother's freind died.
Tantrum spiral.
More disease from dead bodies.
Everyone is dead.

While we make dwarves scuttle away from carp and skeletal shark packs in the current version, when diseases get introduced we will stop using pointy objects in fear that dwarves cut themselves accidently and catch the plague through the open wound.

fix'd that for you.

Contagions and plagues would actually be pretty neat. Even better, it'd introduce witch doctors and folk healers, which is only a good thing.

By the time diseases ever become a functioning mechanic, I'd think the mood system would be tweaked or even majorly overhauled, so things like tantrum spirals will be less prone to happen. That and we'd stop getting dwarves with conflicting personality traits and the little bastards might actually get a lot smarter, too.

They all work together when you stop to think about it, even if at first it doesn't seem so

As a strong proponent of poop and meaningful health care, I like diseases. You could massively reduce disease with good waste management and with proper healthcare applying herbs and salves to cure disease, there'd be no need for random death, just slight lapses in productivity. Failures to provide soap for dwarves entirely covered in shit and not stockpiling enough medicine would probably result in some manner of plague outbreak during a siege and wipe you out in a counterable and thus viable and fun manner

I've never thought about adding poop to the game, just that it would be disgusting, but if it's part of a disease system... just wow. If what Pilsu said (with needing proper waste management and whatnot) were implemented, i can imagine things like outbreaks of Dysentary and Crohn's disease becoming serious threats to the fort.

If a full range of medical herbs and plants and medicines were impossible to acquire in one spot (due to rarity, habitat or whatnot) then something like that would be a MAJOR HUGE GIGANTIC reason for sieges to install "wait out" tactics and just drive away medicine giving caravans until disease takes your whole fort.

Question is, does poop generate high pressure methane if sealed in a chamber underground?

Not only would it explode in a force to split the ground open, it'd shower the countryside with shit! And if it's a semiliquid like magma, you could drown people in it

Hmm, dwarves have a habit of falling into wells, hopefully they'd fare better with outhouses

One sick dwarf a day keeps the migrants at bay.
I'd get the plauge just to not get migrants ^^

Well, their already should be pockets of methane underground. The ammonia from the piss would probably be a bigger breathing hazard though.

Not only would it explode in a force to split the ground open, it'd shower the countryside with shit! And if it's a semiliquid like magma, you could drown people in it

It's a weapon of mass destruction, except with shit.
