Aka the Simpsons syndrome, yes, all too often. Rotary permanent magnet motor, anyone?

136:129

The user below me knows why permanent magnet motors usually don't work.

I could guess that magnets wear out and stuff, but I'm not sure. Just burningly curious.

If you consider the TV running in the background while I stare at the spreadsheet for my RTD as watching it, then yeah.

137:130

The user below me can tell the Loki and the Thor battlemechs apart at a glance.

PM motors tend to fail at working because there is a certain effect involved - not only do all components of the motor have to be nonmetallic, but in order for a motor to complete a cycle, the power it generates at the start of the cycle must be enough to pass through the same point at the end of the cycle. If two magnets push each other apart at the start, then some force must be used to move them away from their positions, and back again, so that the motor is not stopped by the same force that pushes the magnets apart. It is possible to overcome this using clever magnetizing of oddly shaped magnets, but it's beyond feasible and surely not energy-efficient.
