13th Limetone: Dwarves retract drawbridge and lead goblins into cage traps.
17th Limetone: The siege ends!
17th Limetone: Dwarves pull on the drawbridge lever.
17th Limetone: A caravan has arrived.  Their wagons have bypassed your inaccessible site.
17th Limetone: Drawbridge extends.

Damn, you just have no luck whatsoever.

I've been training my dorfs for a while now, but I suspect I need more dorfs, trained earlier.

That's happen to me a few times, it's a real pain when those dwarves have the power to see the future.




How do they know they can't access your site!?

You think that's bad? I've learned that they don't like to show up if you're under seige when they should be arriving. I also had the spawn point bug, so i often had to deal with goblins inside (tm) before actually fighting off the seige.

missed the caravan 3 years running from that.

Oh ho! you think THAT'S bad? how about a caravan arriving, then a goblin ambush spawning only a handful of tiles away from them at the same time!

how about a caravan arrives immediately followed by a small siege which the merchant guards kill for you.

jk. that one was actually a pleasant surprise.

True story.

Caravan spawns on the north side of the map and insta-runs into a goblin ambush the moment they spawn.  End result: draw!  Both the caravan and the entire gobbo company lose all their men!

Simultaneously, migrans spawn on the south side of the map and insta-run into an ambush as well.  Winner: goblins.  Dwarf casualties: 22.

its so much better how corpses and things are auto forbidded now. when this used to happen and half your fort would go to pick up all those great items... now that made for frustrating carnage. and trying to hunt down every last dwarf limb and forbid it so you could let your dwards outside again.

How about when I got my first goblin ambush? Dorf caravan came, ad soon my sole remaining cat spotted a gobbo ambush and promptly got shredded. I activated my milita, but the fortress guard sat around picking their noses, doing absolutely nothing about the situation. Four of my poor wrestlers are killed. I don't know whre the rest of the gobbos went, they must've fled. I only get 2 goblins worth of iron for my trouble on an ironless map.

Not too long ago, I had a caravan enter just moments before an outright siege spawned two of its squads on that edge of the map.  Riding Beak Dogs.  Since the caravan had just spawned, its guards were trickling in one at a time, so they did almost nothing to slow down the goblins as my forces tried to get there.  And when they DID get there, they were strung out and arrived one at a time, so I lost some really good soldiers as they got swamped.

By the time the goblins were finally beaten, the only survivors from the caravan were a merchant and a donkey who had gone completely insane and were beating each other to death.

I designated the constructions to finish my wagon-funneling road before I even began cleanup so that I could be DAMN sure such a thing didn't happen again.

I had that happened to me once before.

Now I keep my depot accessible 24/7, with an underground or shielded passage leading from the depot all the way to the map's edge, with traps and patrols.

When the whole caravan arrived at the depot I pull a lever to seal it up from the outside, then another to connect depot to fortress proper.
