Instead of displaying the double border, the single border could be used to display a smoothed wall that has undiscovered rock behind it. That way, it will look more hewn out of the rock instead of inserted.

Heh, I have to admit something about those walls always bugged me. I could never quite put my finger on it, but it kind of looks like there's a tiny hollow space between the smoothed wall and the undiscovered rock. Good idea, and it's a snap to implement. At least I hope.

I think walls should really be split up into the two sides regardless. As it is now, walls don't make much sense, as they can only be composed of one material, and you can never tell which side is engraved and which isn't.

It would be a bit difficult to implement, but it's definitely possible given that the game doesn't use curses. Only issue is that up to this point the graphics have been more or less terminal-friendly, so I don't know what Toady's plans are in that regard.
