If you want survival tips a general mistake people do is fully explore the caverns.

Unless your going for specific money related secrets you should just go straight down towards the exit.

Along with this always carry a rock with you and don't be afraid to use the Damsel as a weapon.

If no rock or other is available to trigger an arrow trap switch to a bomb walk up to the edge so his does his dance and wait for him to drop it and trigger the trap then you can pick it back up and use it again.

That...is the best thing I've ever heard of.  Thanks for the tip!

Yeah that works really well, I'd been doing it with rope though.

There comes a time when you must take off the soft, furry slippers of a boy and put on the shoes of a man.
Unless of course they don't fit properly and your feet blister up like bubble wrap.
Oh ho ho, but don't try to return the shoes, because they won't take them back once you've worn them.
Especially if that fat pig Tony is at the desk.

Argh. Ive only got 99.8, but ive found a way to make the web gun not useless.

if its in a shop, grab it and let the shopkeeper approach you, then fire the web an instant after you jump towards him; you will hopefully land on his head, and can bounce your way to his death.

also, sorry for necro.

I like using the flare to throw at traps and creatures. It doesn't work so well in levels with water, but the fact that you normally get more flares than you need can be a life saver at times.

You really can't underestimate improvised weaponry in Spelunky. I love how a single rock can save you from countless arrow traps and such.

It's also quite easy to murder a shopkeeper using a rock.  ...and your feet, then his shotgun.

Problem is that without a way to get more Flares wasting it is deadly since Dark stages without flares are unbearable.

In 99.9, you don't have a flare button anymore.  Instead, you get a box of flares at the start of each dark level, which means you don't really have to worry about wasting them on a non-dark level.

Ah, I didn't know that was in the latest version. Flares are plentiful, even for dark levels, anyway. I find that the lifespan is only long enough to go through 3 dark rooms at most. It's better to lose one flare, then to have your lifespan halved by a single arrow trap or a persistent spider. But yeah, it's a tough decision sometimes.. that's what makes the game interesting.
