Just put down the gun and come back for it after you take the dame or the idol to the tunnel.

I bet you chaoticjosh just 'shopped that screenshot.  ;)

Yeah right, I worked hard for that win. Accept my honesty! accept it!

Arghh... I cant even get passed the fourth level, I've died about 100 times and i have only made it to the grassy area once and I died pretty much as soon as I entered. I have decided that I am really bad at platform games and am going to uninstall this...

I'd rethink that decision. If their is only one platformer in the entire world that is worthy of your time, it's this one.

Is it me or is the web gun completely useless?

The wiki hints that it's useful, but the only conceivable use i can find for it is stopping some of the speedier enemies in their tracks. The frogs, cavemen, the crazy jumping cultists, those sort of guys. It still takes some practice though. so all in all, i'd say that yes, it is useless.

Some interesting things i've found:

You can jump onto the "Spelunky" title in the entrance room. Pretty neat.

the exploding frogs, when they take damage, explode. What isn't immediately noticeable though, is that when they're about to explode, you can pick them up and throw them. Pretty useful if your fast about it. Also, the exploding frogs will become normal frogs if they jump into water.

the damsel is immune to most forms of damage, but she can be killed from throw objects and trap. however, she doesn't disappear, and you can still pick up her dead body and throw it at enemies. I find this hilarious, throwing an anonymous woman's dead body at enemies for lethal affect.

the mummy in the last area is immune to magma, so he can walk into the magma pits, and sink to the bottom, and still be firing his bug projectiles at you.

Definitely. This a roguelike; death is common. Very, very common. If it makes you feel any better, I'm even worse.

When I'm carrying her around I can't use my whip, so it often becomes necessary to use the damsel as an improvised weapon.

What about cave story? (Which I shamefully couldn't complete either, got stuck at the boss battle where Toroko eats a demon flower in the sand zone.)

Oh yes, Cave Story is excellent also.

As someone that has beaten CS twice, I'd recommend going back to it.

Really?
That was one of the easiest boss fights in the whole game.

And Josh, I had already found out all of those  ;D
It feels wonderful when you find little things like that in a game.
Once the bugs are ironed out this game will be amazing.
Not that it isn't already.

 GAAAAAAAAA!

Got a shotgun and jetpack and the eye in the first area. Great! Now, onwards to the black market...

 Why isn't the eye blinking?

 NOOOO! NOT THE ICE AREA!

Damn you Spelunky. You hate me, don't you?

Also, 290 deaths and my first win somewhere around the 150'th death. Also, a bronze cup on the changing room and a silver on the sun room. dunno when they open.

This took me a couple tries to confirm:

In the jungle area, during the "the dead are restless" levels, you'll see a number of different tombstones. If your particularly attentive and lucky, you might find a Tombstome that says "ASH" on it.

Ya know what Ash? Bomb it to find Ash William's BOOMSTICK!

Subtle homages to the Evil Dead movies. Can it get any better?

Oh, and I hate to sound Snobby Duke, but I just found the black market for a second time without the help of the Udjat Eye. I was just dicking around with the explody frogs and i found it by accident.

 *Pure, unending rage!*

Dammit Spelunky, it's as if you know the only other game I have is Alone in the Dark, and you know I only play that because I got it for free.

As frustrating as this is, nowhere as frustrating as when you have to plan ahead for the bugs.
"Alright, got to land the car in this way to avoid flying into the sky, and avoid this curb to keep the world from going black..."

Also, some of the custom levels are rather fun. the tower series that comes with the newest version is terribly fun. Other ones are just too difficult for me.

I heard Alone in the Dark was bad, although only from Yahtzee. I don't have a next gen console so I couldn't check it out if i wanted to.

The first area is easy so long as you have no trouble finding the udjat eye and you aren't an idiot that jumps into arrows traps willy-nilly (like i do). In fact, pretty much nothing really poses a threat, the bats are easily whipped, the snakes are easily trounced, the cavemen are easily disabled, the skeletons are easily sussed out, and the GCS are easily bombed, everything is easy... except for those fucking spiders.

I'm serious, i'd take the yetis over the spiders any day of the week. Atleast the Yetis don't bounce around with aggravating height, speed, and accuracy, hellbent on your destruction. 90% of all my deaths in the first area are because of those damn spiders. Sometimes i jump on them and I still take damage. It's crazy.

One wonders if you can't go the other way (with flares?)

As per throwing flares at frogs to make them flaming frogs. Which doesn't work, as I have done it. I don't think flaming frogs actually produce light, but that would help. Now, what happens when a frog jumps into lava...

Also, while I do find spiders a problem to the point where I plan ahead to stop next to the spot they and and whip like a madman in hopes they will always die and always whip pots from a safe distance in case a spider pops out, I find yetis have more death potential. Breed these two together and you have the priests of the fourth area.

Yeah, well, 'coming back' isn't always possible, and besides, throwing the key, then the idol, then the damsel, then the gun.... starts to feel like work... it's doable, but not always fun.

I want to find the city of gold, but the sequence of events that lead up to it is monstrous, and the urge to act like a retard is too great.
