Anything off screen by about 2 or 3 blocks no longer goes anywhere. There are a few exceptions like the giant boulder, but in general anything off screen doesn't move.

I just found out that there are times when you can safely fall onto spikes. If a ledge next to the spike is two blocks high, you can dangle from the side and drop off, unhurt.

I'm unsure if you can dangle from one block height, though.

Some blocks just aren't pushable!  Feature, not bug.  At least that's what I'm assuming.

Haven't seen the falling damage bug though.

And for things off screen, that's a bug in the engine it was built on, I hear.  Well, maybe not bug, but optimization that's not always well-suited to Spelunky..

Let me be first to say not only do different areas have different Idol traps, but that the later ones are impossible. I mean, the area 4 special trap is just plain cruel.

Also, I think something special happens if you have the rod and the doohicky from inside the Easter Island statue.

Also note, this was made in Game Maker. So yeah.

I'm up over 300 deaths, and have the first 2 paths dug.  Only use them to practice the advanced areas though.

How do you 'drop' from a ledge?

Crawl to the ledge (from a distance--if you duck too close, you'll just fall, for some reason).  Then, once you're hanging down, hold down and press jump.  You'll kind of hop down.  If you only drop down a one-foot-high step, it doesn't even count as a -fall- for the purpose of spikes.

And I've beaten the game from the third shortcut, so you don't NEED to go all the way through (unless you want any of the hidden fun stuff of course).

 Lessie...

Whatever this achieves, you need to start from the beginning to do. Beating the game is encouraged to be done from a shortcut.

Note that the rod makes the end boss easier, but isn't essential. If you act fast enough, you can render the final boss nigh helpless, and at that point you don't need too much in the way of weaponry. Note that bombs are nigh essential and ropes can be important as well.

Now now, I found I can beat the final boss using the staircase method. You will know what I mean when you reach it,

Ropes, however, are important for reaching the riches. There are many riches in that room. A cape would be better than a rocket pack here, as it is better for preventing falls that will mess you up.

Ha, i'm really lucky, I...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

the only thing i really don't like about this game is that the running is very difficult to do. Running by itself is dangerous, as you go from nice steady pace to ludicrously fast in a heartbeat. Running jumps are even harder. I also mess up sometimes when i want to crouch while walking and i forget that makes me run. I've died more than once because of that. Guess i'll just have to turn that off for my future games.

I use shift. Actually, I almost always just hold it down all the time. You'll die a lot at first, be eventually it'll be like watching someone playing a Mario game really really well, except that someone will be you.

And Mario will be Spelunky Man.

Controlling your character while running gets fairly easy quickly. You may need to let off of shift if you're trying to jump between two blocks or you want to grab onto a ledge, but I've also usually got the run button held down.

In response to the next post: I know. I meant jumping vertically between two blocks.

Just so you know, you can run across one block wide gaps without jumping, hanging, or letting off the run button.

I just want to know, does the main character have a canon name?
