I find it better than Roguelikes in that you die quickly though.  And can immediately throw yourself back at the game.

It is also very short compared to other rougelikes, with 16 levels at a minute or two per level games rarely go over a half a hour, which makes dying soooo much easier then a game where you spend two hours before losing your guy.

You don't suck, the game is just hard, I had over 600 deaths before my first win, so long as you are having fun just keep trucking along and getting better and you will get there.

Took me ~1000 deaths to get my first win.

You just have to keep playing till you memorize the attack patterns of every enemy, and know just how far you can jump from any nearly circumstance without falling or taking damage.

Oh, and figuring out how the minor bugs (or things that seem to be minor bugs) work (and being able to get them to work reliably) is a huge help too. For instance if you run you can get across a two long gap, and if the ceiling is just one block above you jumping doesn't work. Except if you are just past the end of the block you ran off and jump with near perfect timing (just while it still counts as you being on the block, but you aren't really on it visually), then you can get a extra space, so you can go from two spaces to three after running off blocks with the ceiling right there.

Press P to buy something from a shop.

Make sure to avoid accidently pressing X though, and throwing the item you wanted at the shopkeeper and having him kill you.  :(
Lost some good characters that way.

Be careful not to throw the dice in the casino game too far. or pick up the same one after throwing it. The Shopkeep is very defensive of his dice and enforces the rules of his game with the strictness of Hammurabi.

... Not to mention he has the reflexes of a trigger happy texas ranger on a sugar high.
... And he can jump about 5 times as high as you can.
... And he can hurl you across the room.

The shopkeep is definitely on roids or something.

Imagine my dismay when I learned this while playing around with the dice. [In the second area too :c]

God I love this game, any significant changes/updates in the last few years? Last I played was in like '10 or something.

I swear trying to kill the casino guy (I can't use my normal pot/skull easy safe method so I generally just use sticky bombs) gets me killed less often than trying to play.  It's just so easy to get him annoyed for "cheating".

Actually same goes for regular shopkeepers.  So kill them all.

Screw stigma about bumping, I'll do it anyway.

987 deaths and many swear words later...

If I could throw in my two cents, I think that this is a perfect example of mastering game mechanics, rather then memorizing game patterns.
